Trackers on new bikes

a great idea i would pay the extra on a new bike for this kind of peace of mind:D:D

Depends if it effects insurance premium. That is usually a good sign to weither it actually works…

£2.50:)

Tight wad.

Knocked £200 odd off the price to originally insure my R1 with eBike.

im getting one fitted to mine this year

Factory fitted would be silly.

You’d know the exact location of the units and they’d be ripped out in no time. The beauty behind aftermarket trackers is that you don’t know if they have one fitted and, presumeably, there are alternative locations to hide them.

And don’t forget that there are some people who don’t live in sh*tsville…and you’d have them pay extra for a service that they don’t need? Hmm…!!! Load of rubbish.

Fair enough, if that’s what you think, but just a couple of points.

  1. Factory fit would mean the manufacturer could make it a vital part of the bike meaning without it the bike is useless. This would make more sense in new bikes which aren’t normally stripped down but sold on.

  2. You think bike thefts are limited to less well off areas in London? :w00t:

Bikes are being lifted from the most affluent parts of London. Thieves don’t discriminate.

I’d pay if it was a one off life time subscription for the duration of my owning the bike. That is a fair one.

i think i would pay up to 150.00 ish

I was hoping that bike theft concerned more of you.

Doesn’t matter if you agree with the idea or not, leave a vote and preferably an opinion.

Great idea, but I have a theory. I think car and bike manufacturers would not want to eliminate theft and total loss at all, they rarely suffer the expense of replacing the vehicle, infact they almost always profit from selling a replacement. Just my theory mind you

Think it would only be a matter of time before it would/could be used to track you & bike and any misdermeaners -no?

I’ve been looking into trackers quite a bit after recently purchasing a new bike, and I’m tres paranoid about it going walkies

A big question I’ve been asking myself is why the various manufacturers don’t seem to make the recovery rates known…

I think a text to notify the owner its been moved/tampered with is the most useful aspect. Are there products on the market that just perform this function?

If they are factory fittted then the thiefs will know 100% they are there, and from what I can gather their easily removed, so wouldn’t their effectiveness actually be reduced?

If anyone has a link to an article with tests results/recovery rates I’d be really interested to see it.

well you can be sure the recovery rate for a tracker’d bike is far far higher than those with an alarm, so at similar money what do you need to know? if I was ever likely to hold onto a bike for more than 6 months I would get one straight away!

I have actually designed a vehicle security device (alarm AND tracker) with the aims to eliminate or at least minimize subscription costs. you would know where you bike is at all times and be able to report the location to the police for quick retrieval.

You will find now that a lot of these tracker companies are losing business and are removing there lifetime subscriptions in the near future as the subscriptions are their main sources of revenue.

I am in the process of having final prototypes made and have been in contact with manufacturers with positive responses.

When I have the prototypes made in the next few months I will bring them to Black heath/borough market for you all to see/test.

Better than a zero recovery rate (via alarms), thats some sales pitch!

Is it 1 bike in 10, 1 bike in 50, 1 bike in 1000, 10000? These numbers would make a difference in my decision to purchase, which is why I suspect they are not available.

I just think as a new biker the information relating to bike security (which is obviousley a big issue) from manufacturers of all security devices, is generally poor, and more often than not misleading.

From the little I know the only way I can see bike crime being reduced is with more rigourous testing, higher standards for “approved” products, and better/more tranasparent information.

yes.

but if the tracker really works and you really get your bike back, then i’m up for it. not on my current bike, would install on a new purchase indeed.

The only reason why I don’t have a tracker now is the subscription cost… If I had a 10K bike I’d definitely get the tracker. Also, if I had a 10K bike I’d have a good job to pay for it all as well.

I just have full comp insurance . I don’t have an alarm on any of my bikes and never bother with chains etc . If it gets stolen I do not particuarly want it back unless it’s a KTM race team that nicked it to use as a test bed for performance goodies
