I’ve recently joined LB and have seen quite a few posts of members bikes being stolen.
I don’t think alarms are really worth it but is a tracker? has anyone had a bike successfully retrieved or are they easily ‘disabled’ by the culprits?

Just a reminder.
It’s not a very good idea to specify what security measures you use on your own bike as you never know who is reading.
It’s best to keep replies as general as possible;)
I did think of that that’s why i didn’t include any of my address info on my profile. But dully noted
Yeah gotta say they’re worth it.
Do a search and you’ll find loads of topics on the subject.
Thanks Afro, i did have a look but saw nothing recent. Will get one fitted, if not just for peace of mind.
the other question that comes to mind is when you have it installed do you put the sticker on the bike?
i.e. to you advertise to thieves that there is a tracker on the bike - to deter or will it make them look for it and remove it?
tracker dont make a sticker (for that reason)
altho you could screw with them and get a sticker made up, but not fit a tracker. they’ll be looking for the bugger for ages!
wouldnt help you tho!
might look into the cost of tracker, as peeps say alarms go off and get ignored, is it worth datataging bike as well ? just glad I dont live in london as its reaching eperdemic proportions at the moment

I don’t think datatagging is that useful personally as the thief still likely gets the bike before noticing it has been marked.
When they do realise, they’d probably not give the bike back or dump it, but just trash the marked bits.
I’m sure datatagged stuff still appears on ebay though.
Tracker at least gives you a chance at getting the bike back.
Saying that, moving out of London seems to be the best policy at the moment

Alarms may be a bit of a nuisance sometimes, certainly draining on small batteries, however, it was the alarm which woke me up at 3am when my baby got nicked. Perhaps the reason it was found was coz I saw the thieving scum drive away with it.
Datatag has got to be the biggest waste of money and time for bike security.
My last stolen bike had Datatag and both Met Police station officers I spoke to reporting the theft and trying to get some follow up info, didn’t know what one of those was.
Spoke to a contact in the Met. who told me that the Met have a few scanners but don’t use them much. Too much hassle for too little return.
Don’t know about trackers but I was pretty much told by the Met. that bikes are not very high on their priority list as they are “pretty low value compared to a new mid range car”.
Cant agree more, our bike has no electronic security aids and the key is rusted solid into the ignition. Despite this it does not seem a prime target even when left in full view outside Dilek
s Market and Off Licence.
Quite a result as even inhabited baby buggies have been abducted from outside this establishment!

All Police forces in the UK have Tracker equiped patrol cars available as well as helicopters so the odds of getting a bike back if it has one are much better than Datatag.
In my experience, within 24 hours.
I looked in to this when I got my bike this is what I was told.
Having tried to locate vehicles with Tracker fitted …I can say that it isn’t as good as it states.
There needs to be more than one Police vehicle ( ideally three fitted with Tracker aerials ) to be able to triangulate the signal. This is virtually impossible because there are always other jobs that are more urgent.
When your vehicle is stolen, the signal has to be boosted otherwise it is so weak that it is not possible to pick it up unless you are on top of it.
There is a system that is on the market and it is excellent. It is called RAC Trackstar. This system actually tells the Police by way of live telephone converstaion, where the vehicle is. Not just an area but the actual road and the direction. A representative from the company actually speaks to the Police live…It is fitted to many Subaru Imprezzas and alike. The problem is that Tracker have the market because thewy were the first to do it so the others advertise but don’t get the feedback because Tracker are the firm that anybody knows about.
There is also anther system. It is pretty much free aswell. This is the one that you supply an old mobile phone and the company fit a passive tracker device. You get your pride and joy nicked then you ring them. The mobile is interrogated and then the receiver sends a signal back to the company. This is then available to view for your self online. I have heard that it is very efficient and almost free ( thats got to be worth thinking about ).Thats my four penneth anyway. I would only fit Tracker if they update the system to be more accurate. I don’t know if Trackstar can be fitted to bikes but I don’t really see why not.
I went for this in the end But if you could get that RAC trackstar on a bike I’d would of had that.

I believe that quote has a fair few inaccuracies…
Speak to SeanR6…He used to work for Tracker.
