Track Bike - What To Consider?

I know I’m getting ahead of myself, not having done a track day yet, but I’m a little nurvous about my own bike. If I enjoy three I have lined up, I may opt to buy a track bike.

It looks like I could get something reasonable (although maybe a little old) for around £1,500.

I would then need a trailer, which looks to be around £300 on eBay and a tow bar, which I’m thinking is around £100.

So… £2k would do it.

Is there anything else I should think about? How many track days does one set of tires do you?

Get an SV650 and use part worns

a couple of friends bought a 2009 honda 600 rr and 2006 R6 from a salvage yard both bikes had been dropped they cost around 2.5k each.
race fairings, no lights etc. one thing i was looking into before i bought my road bike.

also a lot off track days hire out bikes, but the excess cost is huge

cbr 600 would be a ideal start for a noob to the track…even a cb500 has a race series so something cheap and cheerful to start with as it’s most likely to become a habit that costs £££ untill you get quicker and want a more dedicated bike or the desire to race

The SV would be a good start, lots of bits about, and you might get one with an extra set of wheels which is great for having Wets on Wheels in the car in case the wet stuff comes down. Also a good learner bike, not too hairy but can still embarass the big bikes when ridden well…

Tyres, there are lots of part-worns around, I have been using them on track and road for a long time, usually 50-80 quid a pair, plus the 30/40 quid for fitting and I find they last me about 5 trackdays, but then I am not pushing them that hard…

New sets of Racetecs or equivalents are around the 220 with fitting mark.

Also you might want to get a track bike that has a V5 with it, a) to give some reassurance it is not stolen and b) you could have it as a road bike later on.

Ask PJ if his ZX7R is still available…

The zx7r has gone, but that would have been a good option for you.

If it was me in your shoes, I would look for a steel framed CBR600 or something like a GSXR600/750 SRAD. They’re great bikes, you’ll be able to buy one ready converted, with wets on wheels and some spares for your budget. There are still loads of spares out there for them, which are cheap and easy to get hold of.

Have a look on motoforum.net as there will be loads of options on there, failing that, plenty of them come up on ebay, so finding one shouldn’t be an issue.

You could go for an SV650, but as you’re a healthy size, having 68bhp might not give you the buzz you’re looking for. The SV also uses the 160 rear tyre, so scrubs aren’t as readily available.

In regards to trailers, it might be worth taking a look at item number 300708016238 on ebay, as they’re certainly an option worth looking at. The only thing with those, is that you’d probably want to have a spare rear wheel with a rock hard tyre on for when you’re towing it! But they’re certainly a lot easier to store. If you spend a little more money, you could get a foldable trailer.

If you want any help at all, then just give me a shout, I have a few months off now, so am about to help with stuff like this. But I guess for you, you need to get these track days out of the way, then if you’re hooked (which you probably will be), then you’ll need a towbar and trailer sorted first I guess.

In regards to getting a track bike, they are an excellent idea at the budget you’ll be spending, even if you have a low side on your bike at 40mph+, you’ll probably do 1500 quids worth of damage, and then you’re bike is off the road for x number of weeks.

Good luck,

Rich

Thanks for the tips.

Having a look through eBay for CBR 600’s there seem to be quite a few options under even £1,000. This is getting dangerous… must resist… must… resist…

+1 for CBR600
I love mine but I do love a Honda.
I wouldnt be keen on an SV650 personally but it is probably a good cheaper option. I test rode one a few years ago when they were so cheap that a brand new one with cash back was the same price as the 5 year old CBR600F I ended up getting. I prefer the inline 4 and suppose I wouldnt want to practice on the track on a twin when its not what I normally ride. I know loads of people do that but I’m just not as skilled
Regarding ebay, I always said I wouldnt get a bike off ebay but ended up getting my trackbike there. I did speak to the guy beforehand and decided he seemed trustworthy when I went up to look at the bike with Matt. He was in his 60s, use to race sidecars and had clearly looked after bike. He even pointed out that there was a tiny crack in the brake caliper and gave me a replacement along with loads of other stuff just because he felt bad selling like that.
Good luck. I think you will enjoy trackdays more if you have a trackbike :0)

I’ve been offered a 1999 Honda Fireblade for £1,200 with some spares at mates rates from a friend of a friend. A quick look on eBay shows most of them around £1,700 to £2,200. Seems a good buy?

I’m a little stumped by the trailers. Anyone recommend one? I want it to take at least 2 bikes though.

Buy it and if you don’t like it just sell it. No brainer.

Depends how hyped up the Fireblade is, it could be a bit lairy for a first timer…the 600 would definitely be a bit more forgiving. However it does seem like a good bargin!

A 600 is also a heck of a lot more work.

I’ve changed a few of the decals this morning

Nice!

Decals look great Andy…

It’s near impossible to imagine a man of your stature brandishing a hair dryer, but now I know… It looks like a miniature hair dryer haha

All I know is it blew hot air for me…

I did feel a little odd asking to borrow it from my house mate
