To wave/nod or not?

Personally I prefer the leg waggling thing to say thank you and I NEVER nod at Scoots/ learners/ Couriers. The learner thing is just so I don’t put them off and make them crash!

France is going to be CRAZY as the French wave all the time, even when you’re blasting up the motorways at [mumble] speeds.

Oh and Porky, I always nod at you guys for the same reason as Patrick. But I get really miffed if you guys don’t nod back (which, by the way, happens most of the time).

I nod except to chavs on scoots/pizza delivery types… Tend to do it less in town as self preservation is a tadge more important than a wave IMO…

Have you noticed that no one nods on their morning commute?

I’ve got 2 lots of lb decals on my bike and I’ve just had some decals made with ‘gridgirl’ I’ve put on my helmet they do look quite kewl tho …

Where do you get them made? I’d like some

I nod to everyone except scooters and couriers.

I also if possible give a wave to car drivers who make space for you when filtering

the lb decals you can get from this site, my personal ones I had made by someone from another site who lives near me

Sorry, where abouts do I order them from? I look at the merchandise page and I can see badges and T shirts and such, but no decals?

I’ll pm you … don’t want to hijack dannyboys post …

usually a nod at the big bikes!.

here’s more about what the ‘nod’ is…

havent’ seen anyone nod in ages. sometimes do when i pull up at the lights

scoots i’d rather kick them than nod at them

Yes, but only in London (understandable), head out of London and i get a sore neck nodding back at everyone

Nodding it is then; another lessen learned

As mentioned before, in my home country, lifting the fingers of the clutch to acknowledge a fellow motorbike rider is the norm. Everyone with a proper bike, e.g. >250cc is greeted and greets back. Scooter riders are duly ignored. Scratching your leg or neck is in this case a good disguse, should you have raised your fingers to an oncoming walking-aid-substitute rider.

Over here it seems somewhat difficult to fake a discussion and subsequent agreement with an imagined pillion, after accidentally nodding to a scooter rider… …all in the split second before passing each other.

I find it depends what bike/how you look. Inside the M25 with textile trousers, waterpoofs or high vis jacket riding a commuter bike, forget it. Outside M25, leathers on, tinted visor you get a lot more. I think there is a bit of bike snobbery. On a Hornet you get maybe 1 in 10. The crotch rockets don’t bother on the whole. On a Gixxer you get 1 in 3. I find it a bit off putting actually. I am still the same biker, but now you nod! I nod back if I get acknowledged but find it a bit pointless. Can you imagine going to Boxhill etc and nodding at everyone as you walk past them on the way for a cup of coffee or a pee? now that would be funny So why is it different behind tinted visor Sometimes I check my mirrors, which might look like a nod

If I see them, I nod, whatever they’re riding. When I was on my little bike with L’s I’d be grinning when someone nodded at me, being new to the ‘biking fraternity’ thang an’ all.

Porky, if I saw any of your lot on a company bike, I’d nod at them too, though haven’t seen any round here for a good while.

I have noticed that the closer I get to Box (on my Virago, wearing just plain black) the more snobby the plastics riders - often get ignored. Harley riders always nod back at me though.

I even waved at a car that moved over to let me overtake today, which I will always do. I acknowledge politeness in my car, why not do the same on a bike, I say.

I’ve even taught my littlies to wave at bikes when they’re pillion, gives them something to look out for and saves them getting bored when they’re on the back.

Didn’t realise the leg waving thing was actually a wave - I thought it was just the biking equivalent of a footballer shoving his hands down his shorts to adjust his equipment!

I nod to everyone (not scooters - sorry) but not many nod back to me - Are they L-plate-ist?

Yep, sorry hun

Chocco, so if Harley riders nod at you it seems fair to assume people only nod or wave at people who have similar bikes to them?

Today I tested this theory, I nodded at 4 sportsbike riders, 3 nodded back, although the 4th was riding rather closely to a bus at about 40mph, strange behaviour!

I also attempted to nod at some scooters, and some other bike, don’t ask me what it was, it wasn’t a sportsbike, and they wasn’t even paying me any attention, lol

Although on my way back from Box Hill on Sunday I got loadsa nods … oh and a Stoppie

I always try and nod even in town unless I’m seeing something ahead that may cause problems.

I’ll also give some full beam flashes if there is a problem ahead of a fellow biker going the opposite direction.
