reason being is order of operations (Parenthases, Exponents MULTIPLICATION, Division, ADDITION, then Subtraction) or PEMDAS. So you would do it like this
40+(40 x 0) +1
40 x 0 = 0 so plug it back in
40 + (0) + 1
and thats 41!

I saw a random photo yesterday online and it caused alot of confusion! I know the answer is 41, but after seeing the amount of confusion I decided to put it onto my FB and see what everyone said. I got a few different answers but the arguments it caused were hilarious!!!

Not if you follow the rules of mathematical notation it isn’t as multiplication takes priority over addition.

Well without specifying the order of operations of course you will cause confusion. The skill is doing so at the right time when the maximum number of people will take the bait and start arguing. You can see from this thread that initially the timing was bad = no arguments. But since then you seem to have tapped into the “bored” continuum and its about to kick off.
