Thruxton BSB

Just got back from practice day and photo’s are uploading.

Do you know it takes at least an hour for 1GB of RAW photos to download to the PC? And then there’s another 1.5 GB to go. Then the wading through, sorting out, comparing, editing and finally submitting to Jay for the gallery.

Going as fast as, but likely to be tomorrow.

An hour!? It takes about thirty seconds man! I use the CF reader in my monitor, which dumps it to the PC via USB2.0. I used to jack the D70 into a USB1.0 port and it would take about five minutes or so. How are you doing it mate? That’s not right…

Personally I don’t use RAW, I find it slows action-shots and post-proc down massively. I use large, normal jpeg settings and just fire off more shots than I need to ensure I get some good ones. The file-sizes aren’t justifiable either, 1gb per session of shots? My HD is only so big!

I use RAW all the time but for slow and portrait shows mainly, if i’m doing sports stuff then large JPG is fine that said the D60 takes 6 rapid shots on RAW before the buffering kicks in …

If you really want to play with RAW then open them in Adobe Photobridge and push and pull the temperature, shadows etc etc get some very dramatic changes to the photo

Yeah I’m going off RAW too! It’s true that JPEGs download in a fraction of that time, and doubtless a card reader would speed things up - must check’em out.

But RAW images are meant to be mucho better -but I’m just not very patient ! Looking at them downloading, I can hear the bikes and smell the exhaust again. Think I’m hooked.

Twas good today, for a fiver in you could wander about the paddock and around the back of the pits, never mind watching the racing! Had a chat with Hayden, McGuiness, Smart and Niall McK.

Nobody binned it as far as I’m aware, which is good, and Thruxton looks a fun circuit. It has conveniently low fences for the most part, although you are limited to how much of the circuit you can get round.

edit - just ordered card reader too. No mention of bolting horses and open stable doors please.

Looking forward to the pics. Andrew, the Donington pit lane ones were good, captions hilarious, especially the Stobart Honda/ Rutters legs one and the tea boy mechanic. Keep up the good work.

I like Thruxton as well, not the best for viewing but quite easy to get behind the scenes and nose around the back of the garages, especially if you make the effort and purchase some team kit to fit in. If youre really cheeky theyll let you watch the monitors.

I can’t talk the talk tho, so end up saying really blond things and wishing I knew more about bike setup and racing. Hehe

And you haven’t seen the best pics from Donington yet…

I use RAW for detail, static stuff, but all in-the-field stuff is JPEG. RAW is great for post-prod, but it’s a slow beast on even the most powerful of computers. Attempting to batch-process a card of RAW’s is just silly. If you use large jpeg then you can correct most problems without loss of quality, especially when you factor in the eventual downsize to web sizes.

Is the card-reader using USB2.0, Andrew? Looking forward to seeing the Thruxton pictures!

Yah getting USB2 reader. And switched back to JPEG today. Much better. You live and learn.

Should have some nice ones today, the sun was out for a lot of it - although there are some sweet ones from Friday in the rain.

I thought I’d do a big gallery of the entire weekend if that’s ok so there aren’t loads of little galleries of the same thing cluttering the place up. I appreciate that racing is not everyone’s cup of tea (damn philistines the lot of 'em).

And you must have the grown up version of Photoshop if you can do batch processing. I’ve only got Elements 3 which has all the fundemental features except that one. For batch resizing I can use a free program called Easy Thumbnails (if any one is interested) which is cool. Anyway, better get started. Wonder how many blurred ones there’ll be?

Andrew,

I use Photoshop all the time for my photo’s, but if you want something quick, easy and really handy on doing bath processing ( bucket loads of options ) , check out www.compupic.com ( pro version ) …

if you need a 14 Day trial extention i can point you in the right direction. Been using it for years now and i actually paid the $99 for it

I use jpeg for sport but RAW for everything else. Photoshop Elemants and Nikon Capture as software.

Digital Photography mag highly recommends Pixmantec RAW software. A bonus is that is free.
