Things not looking so rosey at the moment

Where do I start!!My company has made 6 people redundant, they have asked in excess of 20 people to go down to 4 days, my manager has just been told go to 4 days or take a 10% pay cut!

I’m now sh!ting myself as I think I’m going to be on the chopping block sometime soon!

what the Feck am I going to do, the last thing I want to be doing over xmas is worrying about having a job to go back to!

Mate, Its a nightmare. It seems to be happening every where. I lost my job at the start of Nov. Nothing around at all in my line off work, I just hope in Jan a lot companies get there budgets.

We are have a cheap Christmas.!

what is it you do woo woo?

Yep, had a nice letter last week saying we were to be given a 10% pay cut effective immediately.

Work certainly does suck at the mo.

I took a 75% pay cut from 2007 for this year so with a new arrival in the family I have cancelled xmas for all none essential personal (my 7 years old has been saved but just on good behavior) under the Credit Crunch resolution 1.01 voted by myself at unanimity:angry:

Sadly there’s lots of people in the same boat, I have two friends who will be having a less than rosey time over Christmas.

A good friend of mine has just lost his wife to breast cancer, she was only 44, leaving him and his two teenage kids to try to come to terms with it all over Christmas, sadly I think every Christmas from now on for them is not going to be the same… :crying:

The other friend turned up for work last Friday at 8.30am and by 9.00am she was on the train on her way home, she had to go in Monday morning to discuss redundancy terms, I suspect she’ll also be having a quiet Christmas. :frowning:

So whilst it’s cold comfort Sleeper you’re certainly not alone dude, I’ll keep my fingers crossed things work out for you…

well the 1st comment here, at least what ever comes, I will have my family (and hopfully a roof over my head).

and cheers man, I did not want to leave this job as I really enjoy it here, but I think i’m going to start looking now and jump rather than get pushed…

We lost about 15% of our employees two weeks ago - luckily I wasn’t one of them, but with the state the economy is in it could well be me next.Software companies aren’t the best places to be in a recession :frowning:

I have been in this situation a few times, and if you cannot influence the outcome, there is no point fretting about it.

Get your CV up to date, and just be prepared for the worst, if it doesn’t happen, happy days:)

Lol thats just what I have been doing getting it upto date…Had a thought though, wanted to emigrate anyway so if it does go pear shape, I guess now will be as good a time as any to get up and ship out…

In the last 3 months, I know that 5 people in our company have left to go to work in Canada, if that helps?

Same here, 7 gone last week and 2 more to find in the next few weeks plus pay cuts. The good times have gone and it’s going to be very rough for the next couple of years.

sorry to hear that buddy and i hope your not next, but ifyou really are looking to go abroad and you think your good at what you do (seriously speaking) take a look at greece, i know they could use your analytical skills out there. plus the country roads were built for bikes

We’ve been told here at Bloomberg we may be still hiring. That may just be on the news/journalist side where I work. But could be other parts of the company too. Either way, may be worth a shot sending a cv this way.

Sorry to hear your head might be on that block. I would definitely brush-up the CV and look around but be sure your name is on that list before you jump as all your employment rights will disappear, as will any chance of redundancy payments, however small. I think that any new company can take you on and let you go at anytime within the first 3 months, or longer if their T’s and C’s say so – if they operate a last in first out policy you won’t stand a chance. Also, keep your job search very secret as you may be added to a redundancy list if they think you are looking.

No disrespect to anyone on here who has been made redundant but may companies will use this opportunity to remove faces that don’t fit, dead wood and duplicated resources across their business. Weak Managers trying to defend their positions will also point the finger at their subordinates ‘betters’ in order to remove threats.

It’s worth remembering this is a World Wide recession and you may be in a stronger position getting a job here than being a foreigner in search of work in an unfamiliar country

Good luck Karl.

Yep Alberta are doing fast track immigration if you have the right skills. Only around -16 there at the moment.

We’re hiring techie people, see here:

If anything sounds like your bag, email me your cv and I’ll put it forward.

Well a couple of Fridays ago (Woolies head office) we were all called to ‘briefings’ at 12.00, in different areas of the building. All but one briefing were told that the administrators appointed by the banks had decided to make us all redundant with immediate effect (450 people in total that day).
They made no money available to us in terms of redundancy so we have to claim statutory from the national insurance fund, which amounts to fukk all. No notice period pay either.

Ho ho fukkin ho !

if anyone knows of any business Analyst / Business Systems Analyst jobs going

I work at Ford Mo Co…we have been on down days for past few months and they let the assembly line have their xmas break a week early starting this monday, they should have finished next Tues? They have cut back on all sorts throughout the plant for months now. We cant even order pencils if we need them…its easier to just buy our own and bring them in. People who were told beginning of the year they werent eligible for retirement have now been released. Many that were taken on as temps, have all been released, with no offers of permanent jobs, that some were promised would materialise when they were taken on. (a temp even committed suicide), very sad.

People are having to carry out 2 and sometimes 3 persons jobs. Dont know what will happen in 2009 but the situ with GM is not good. If they go under it will have a knock on effect for Ford. I guess i could get a job in a office somewhere, but to be honest i doubt there will be anything available and what makes me think i would be able to get one over anyone else looking…doubt i would be considered to even be a shelf stacker !!

Ive been doing up my house this past few weeks and the expense of that is going into stupidness !! A tin of paint costs £31.99 at B&Q !!! I went to the discontinued line shelf and found a tin of the colour i wanted, for £8…but what if it didnt have the colour i wanted?

Ive had to buy a new toilet and bathroom basin and the extras you have to pay for those is just ridiculous as well, even down to the silicone sealants !! The taps are £75 :w00t: Thats without the plumbers fees. Just bought a carpet and to have that fitted i was quoted £100, then i found someone else at £80…its just to put on my stairs!! imagine if i wanted the whole house done…ha, and the other day i was in the supermarket, didnt even have a trolley load and it came to £110…seriously, i didnt buy anywhere near what i wanted…no meat or cleaning stuff…oh and they have just announced they have put up my electric per month to £65…(to bring it in line with how much we are using apparently!) Ive got to tax the car this month and my credit card bill will drop though the door any moment…i took the car for a tyre, ended up i needed 3 of them and had to pay £160…the list goes on…will i have a job when i go back after xmas…? who knows… oh, and my son come back home 3 years ago stating he was only going to be with us for 3 wks…

Merry Christmas Blade:w00t:

Mate of mine works at Ford, Dunton, and he told me that there was going to be people laid off, temps mainly, but about 30 from his department alone, which isn’t the biggest in comparison to many there.

Its not a good time out there people as we are all reading but i’m sure that if we just tighten our belts and keep our heads down at work and do what is asked then we should be ok. Suicide is not an option in my world and no matter how bad it gets we have friends and family that we can call on for help and advise. Keep your chin up Blade, Sleeper and the rest of you it looks like sh7t out there and it is but hang in and try and have as good a festive season as possible.

Just think of the children we delivered presents to last saturday and the toy run on sunday, think of the life these people have and then consider that we have our health and a roof over our heads and clothes to wear. Remember also that Christmas is a time for giving not recieving and the warmth it gave us all when we heard how much joy it would bring the children at the hospice.

Have as good a Christmas as possible people and try and look forward to 2009 with positive thoughts.
