Theft prevention

Hi only my 2nd post and not sure if this is the right section, im sure the mods will move to the right section if need be.

Im looking to get a new scooter for commuting as my first ride and keeping it seems to be a bit of an issue reading some of the posts in this section.
Obviously the biggest threat is man and van senarios as it gone in seconds. The general advice ive read is get good chains etc and also chain it to something. Now in some bike bays ive seen posts to chain to but not everywhere which is where the problems seem to arise.
On my surfing travels for knowledge i found http://www.lock2lock.co.uk/ which seems a superb idea to help prevent theft.
The only downside i can see is if its not very popular or if you chain up and the other biker comes along 5 minutes later and is off on their way.

Is this a popular scheme in london and does it works in reality ?

Also is this product any good ? I thought a pair of these fitted would make things harder as you couldnt wheel a bike away.Anyone use this product ?
Ive no problems paying out for decent security products as it normally is worthwhile in the longterm in terms of inconvenience if something happens etc.

What else can you recommend ?

2 of those grip locks and you’re most of the way towards a short almax chain, which will be more effective IMO, might even stop the van guys

And along the same lines, that price will get a Xena Alarmed Disk Lock, which has gotta be more value (or at least attract an audience to watch your bike getting stolen, eh Oli? :stuck_out_tongue: )

I was thinking more along the lines of alarms, chains as well as those grip locks.I already use alarm padlocks on my mountain bike to great effect.

Watched a few videos on youtube of bike thefts and it seems wheeling it away is a popular technique, a lot harder with the brakes on was my thinking.

Surely an almax isnt much good unless its locked to something ? Once in a van its angle grinder heaven anyway.

The idea of chaining up to other bikes seems a brilliant idea to combat lifting.

My main problem is i may be working in different areas of london each week that i dont know that well, hence my concerns.

wouldn’t bother with those grip locks

a thief could easily pop along with a spanner and loosen off the bleed nipple or banjo bolt to release the brake and push it away…

get a chain and/or disk lock… Also your bike is gonna get bashed up if you park it in London shared bays…

the problem wit the grip lock is that they can always just cut the brake line, and wheel it away.

The alarm seems to be a matter of debate, many say that an alarmed disk lock does all the alarm does but without the potential to immobilise your bike for no reason (low battery, electrical fault etc)

Almax is better than a grip lock, even locked to itself round the wheel/seat

Ok thats the sort of feedback i was looking for about the grip locks.

Does anyone use the lock 2 lock scheme or have any views on it ?

Lock to lock (or chain ganging as we called it 40 year back) makes it very difficult to lift a bike …

Personally I prefer locking my bike to a fixed object (post, rail, tree etc), if you loop your chain through another chain and the other bike departs, your bike becomes an easy van lift.
