Take some advice. IF you must have a credit card, set it up to automatically pay the whole balance every month. NEVER get in the trap of paying the minimum payment every month - if you do that they will have you by the balls. If you can’t afford to pay for something at the end of the month, DONT BUY IT. They can only exploit you (at any age) if you let them.
Oh there are some criminal rates out there on loans and credit cards.
Always read the small print and do price comparisson sites. Also only get a credit card if you are able to control your spending it is so easy to blow cash and then not be able to pay it back!
who me? its an alternative, and i wouldn’t leave a credit card, or pre pay card, or cash under the seat… but he is going to do one of these options, so why not suggest an alternative?
Surely these are only for people with (as has been said) very few options. The person using this probably has a terrible credit rating. The bank take a risk, but balance that risk with a high interest rate.
I had something similar (not quite this crazy) as my first credit card. As has been said, pay of huge chunks, if not all, and build yourself some credit history to then get a normal credit card.
Just carry emergency cash, put it in a particular compartment of your wallet. You’re mental putting a card under your seat a) it’ll get lost b) people may take it/find it and then use it online. c) What happens if the machine doesn’t work or they don’t take cards???
Why not pay for breakdown recovery that’s £30 isn’t it???
I think you’re assuming that he’s going to do one of the options you mentioned.
It just sounds strange to me to suggest something that I wouldn’t do myself.
My alternative suggestion would be something similar to Miss Plum’s - cash in a secret compartment (although I go with bike jacket rather than wallet - too easy to spend when your drunk) or the recovery service.
Good call Plum.
Perhaps you could look at Debit instead of Credit Cards.
Its not actually gonna sit under the seat. I meant that it’d be with me when I’m on the bike but left elsewhere when I’m not to avoid frivolous spending.
As you say, the rate is very high. But if it is just to give you peace of mind - then there’s no harm having it. Use it in an emergency, pay it off and there’s no interest.
After a while you will build some credit history and the rates offered will come down closer to a standard credit card rate.
Checkout moneysupermarket.com for a range of cards / rates etc. They are a pretty good site in my experience.
