The right chain lube...

Ive been using Silkolene Titanium Chain gel but i kinda want to keep the chain looking nice and clean. The chain gel does work well but lots tends to end up on the wheel and now ive just had them finished im intending to keep them shiny. That includes the chain itself.

So whats the best chain stuff for the job and whats the best way to keep it clean?

I had same prob, getting pissed off at the state of the chain and back wheel using the usual lubes. Then I tried Wurth dry chain lube. Excellent stuff! Chain and wheel stay clean for yonks, plus it doesn’t fling off.

Get all the old **** off the chain with parrafin, dry it off with a rag and leave to dry for a while then put the wurth lube on.

Morning Gixer600… I use Wurth Dry Chain Lube too… Been using it for a couple of years now, with no compliants… Mmmmmm no more dirtback wheel!!

Starting using Wurth stuff about 3 weeks ago… its good stuff but the instructions seem fooked up… says “Hold can 15 cm (approx) from chain and apply”… fooking hell it would be everywhere if I did that!! Great stuff though… if you didnt touch the chain to check you wouldnt know it was on… Although me mate who rides a zx6r and R1 only ever uses WD40…

I clean the chain weekly with WD40, thoroughally, then with the bike on a paddock-stand, apply some clear-spray lube (normally Rock Oil, whatever’s in the local shop), wipe off the excess, start the engine up and put her in gear, spin the wheel to get the remaining excess off, then wipe that off whatever it got flung onto.

I might try this Wurth’s products though, cheers.

I seem to be like Jay, kind of do the same thing. Clean wheel off with Brake Cleaner as opposed to WD though. May have to give this product a try, any ideas where you get it as my local bike shop definatley dont carry that?

Have a look here chuffster-

You Boyzzz just don’t know what your missing!!! I have a few cans Jay… I’ll sort ya one!

I lube the chain when I can hear it rattling as I go through the Hanger Lane underpass on the way to/from work

Oh nooo! Dirty??? You said dirty wheel?? Where? not mine mate?

The Wurth stuff is really good, dries clear and isn’t messy at all. There is also another clear one that i used to use and i think i got it from Demon Tweeks,it’s called Profi Dry Lube and is the best dry chain lube i have ever used, only bugger is they don’t seem to have any most of the time.

All i do is clean the chain with some parrafin on an old sock/T-shirt etc and run that all over the chain until it is nice and clean, get a dry and clean old sock/T-shirt and wipe over the chain to try and dry off the parrafin a bit, leave it to air dry for a while then go and spray with the Wurth gear.Job done.

Rod I just looked and silly me has run out!!! I know where they sell it round the corner from me… I’ll get you a can…

How do you guys go about cleaning ya chains???

do you break it and clean it off the bike??
or remove the rear wheel so that there is a load of slack??

or do you remove the swingarm from the sub frame so that you can remove the chain without breaking it??

(I’m guessing its not the last option)

Wasps.

Just stop dismantling that poor R6. Put the Dremel away dammit!

I know it’ll “polish out…”

Wasps, it’s far simpler than any of those options. What I do is put the bike on paddock-stands and just spin the wheel, cleaning everything off the chain as it spins, then lube it again after, and clean off any excess.

that was originally one of my options, but it seemed too sensible so i took it off.

The problem i find doing it that way is that if using paraffin (or petrol when i had nothing else) you have to scrub the chain to get the gunk off.
Whereas if you can have a paraffin bath it makes it a lot easier…

but then i suppose its more of a pain to take the wheel off…

oh bugger it… i’ll go back to using spittle to keep the chain clean

Wouldn’t it be so much fun if all the silly options worked!!! And Messy!!!

Iv’e found that using the oil from one of those chain oiler works wonders, as its proper oil it soaks into the chain better.
It’s also easier to clean off the bike i.e not as sticky, and cleaning the chain before aplying a new coat of oil is much easier.
the only slight downside is you mos probably have to oil more the using the normal sticky lube.

By the way what do the race teams use? or is there no need to oil/lube a new chain which is only going to do a few miles then go in the bin.
