Do generally give the nod as long as its a bike and not a ped! Sometimes i’ll wait to see if they nod and generally all sports bike riders nod and most tourers - dont bother with couriers as if they did bother they would just be riding round like a nodding dog all day!
I went past a young’un on an RS125 yesterday and gave the nod, he nodded back and waved the thumbs up - it reminded me of when i first got my RS125 and got the nod for the first time on the way back from the dealer in Leicester on the A1… I then ran out of petrol and was helped out by a good fella on a blade, I just stood there and admired his bike! you wouldnt get that in a car!
I think this goes back to the old AA patrolmans salute …
If the patrolman salutes all is well, no salute and there be trouble ahead. I guess the all clear/danger message has been lost in the mists of time as we’ve progressed from salutes to nodding heads via thumbs up/down, waving hands, Morse code, semaphore, CB radio, shaking legs and nodding heads.
I felt really happy when I got my first nod and love this community spirit. I tend to do more nods obviously at the weekends, and perhaps don’t bother if its during the working week as such, and don’t do working bikes - pizzas and couriers. I’ve had a nod from a Harley rider, perhaps cause I looked round to admire his ride. I’m all for it.
I always give the nod except peds but get the right arsehole if they dont nod back. Had a bloke opposite me on the way to Epping from woodford and he was giving me some signals I disnt understand, 10 mins later I knew what he was on about when there were 4 dips in the road with massive puddles/floods were. Was a bit cautious anyway due to not thinking that he was trying to tell me something, big nods up if your that biker!
Generally nod to Bikers riding the similar kind of bike as me, not for any prejudice or anything just limits the nodding dog effect. Not a golden rule however.
What do people do when encountering a group? Generally the first and last rider depending on group size.
i do it to any two wheeled machine on the road but the ones who dont do it back i think they are snobby wankers but the ones who do it back have my respect.
Its generally because a lot of peds (or as you say - scooters) are ridden by little scrotes, also very few people are riding them for the joy that biking gives - i’ve only known one person that enjoys the biking experience and random ride outs that has a scooter…that was because he could no longer ride a bike due to an accident but could ride his T-Max 500!
Cripes. I’m old enough to remember the AA man’s salute. If you got one, all was well, if you didn’t the police were operating a “speed trap” up ahead.
Today on the A21 I get a few flashes from a guy on other carriageway, I give him the nod, he shakes his heads. A couple of miles on there’s the boys on the grass verge with an ANPR van with the traffic car in the lay by a few hundred yards past.
My first biker nod in the UK was from a chap on a maxi scooter. The first nod always feels good. Since then I try to style it out if I’m bored with variations on speed and direction.
In Europe you wave using your clutch hand as oncoming bikes are passing you on your left. That would obviously not be practical in the UK. We used to wave all the time during our lessons then get reprimanded (strong Dutch accent). “Joseph do not wave at the other bikers, this is for when you have your license.”
they’re usually too busy masturbating themselves mentally… or more likely, doing the complex trigonometry and geometry required to negotiate sofas through stationary London Traffic …
