'Terror Strike' As Burning Jeep Hits Airport

The Government has raised the national terror threat level to “critical” after a burning Jeep was rammed into the terminal building at Glasgow airport.
The country is now at its highest threat level and means an attack is expected “imminently”.
Jeep rammed into building at 30mphAs she arrived at the Cobra emergency meeting, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith described the Glasgow incident as “serious”.

The Jeep Cherokee was rammed into the terminal at 3.11pm this afternoon.

Witnesses reported hearing a series of loud “bangs” and saw two men - one of whom was on fire - emerge from the vehicle.

As holidaymakers ran screaming from the terminal, one member of the public managed to floor the man who was in flames.

The suspect was then arrested by police and taken to Paisley’s Alexandra hospital, which has since been evacuated.

The second man was arrested and taken to Govan police station. Police sources said officers used mace spray on one of the suspects to subdue him.

Some witnesses told Sky News they saw three men in the Jeep, and they were all wearing boiler suits.

Blackpool airport has now been shut down and security tightened at Newcastle and Edinburgh airports. The US has also installed extra security at its airports.

Sniffer dogs are checking for explosives at Glasgow airport and the surrounding car parks.

There were reports of an incident at Heathrow airport this evening, but police said it was a “non-suspicious car fire”.

It comes just a day after two car bombs were found in London. And it is in the same week that Gordon Brown became Britain’s new Prime Minister, and is exactly seven days before the second anniversary of the 7/7 attacks in London.

The Jeep was being driven at around 30mph when it smashed into a glass door at Terminal One of Glasgow airport.

Hundreds of shocked holidaymakers were in the area at the time, and witnesses said some of them removed gas cylinders from the jeep.

There are reports the occupants - described as Asian males - were trying to pour petrol on the flames.

There was chaos at the sceneScott Gleeson said he saw the jeep speed up and swerve towards the terminal at an angle to hit the door.

“They were obviously trying to get through to cause as much damage as possible,” he said.

Holidaymaker Stephen Clarkson said he knocked one of the men to the floor before police intervened.

He said: "There was an Asian male. He was lying on the floor and he was on fire, the Jeep was on fire as well.

“The fellow got up and started fighting with police. I managed to knock the Asian fellow to the ground and four police officers got on top of him.”

He added: “His whole body was on fire. He was quite a big fellow and was disorientated otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to knock him down.”

James Edgar told Sky News: “There was a lot of anger - if the crowds had got hold of this gentleman it would have been the end of him.”

The airport has been closed and holidaymakers are being sheltered at nearby buildings. Passengers on 12 jets that landed at Glasgow airport are still on board their planes.

A rather more in-depth and trust worthy source for the news on this current issue here

I know I’m biased - but after working in the Sky News Room and now the BBC I know our news is correct - as opposed to Sky’s who’s moto is - break it first, fix it later - in other words get it ‘out there’ first - means they’re first with the news - and then correct if later if it’s wrong - which is quite often is…

sorry… rant over.

Latest quote from our new Prime Minister

“i’ve just come from a meeting with the police and with the
security services and with the Home Secretary and government ministers
and let me first of all thank the police, security services, all the
emergency services for the dedicated professionalism that has been shown
in response to the incidents yesterday in London and now today the
attack at Glasgow Airport. The first duty of a government is the
security and safety of all the British people, so it is right to raise
the levels of security at airports and in crowded places in the light of
the heightened threat. I want all British people to be vigilant and I
want them to support the police and all the authorities in the difficult
decisions that they have to make. I know that the British people will
stand together, united, resolute and strong”

okay ‘rumours’ from the news room.

Glasgow Hospital is being evacuated right now - the bomber was taken there and there’s a fear he had a suicide vest on. (trying to get confirmation now but expect to see it on Sky anyway)

In London several suspected devices have been found, in particular armed response officers have been deployed to Mayfair.

all rumours at this stage folks.

STATEMENT FROM THE METROPOLITAN POLICE

The MPS has conducted an immediate further review of policing plans in
London to ensure that they are commensurate with the current threat
level.
Security at Heathrow Airport has been thoroughly reviewed, in
conjunction with key partners, and we have introduced enhanced levels of
policing and security.

This includes increased patrols by armed officers and the closure of
access to the forecourts.

This is for the reassurance and security of the public, and the measures
that have been introduced are within our well established contingency
plans.

We are in liaison with colleagues in surrounding Forces to the Airport.

The same approach is being taken at London City Airport.

Policing levels across the Capital were reviewed following Friday’s
incidents we have deployed an enhanced number of officers for high
visibility policing and this is continuing for the foreseeable future.

We are working closely with our colleagues from British Transport Police
and the City of London Police to ensure this enhanced policing is
replicated across the Capital.

Any additional measures that are needed will be taken.

Sky have better pictures at the moment - but no press are being allowed anywhere near so no-one can see the scene.

Seems like a load of hot air over not very much. This stuff wouldn’t even get on local radio in Israel! The hype machine still turns.

You’re certainly right about the 24 hour news operation grasping every tiny little aspect out of any ‘news’ event… but come on… this would get air time in Israel - it doesn’t happen that often over there any more - Iraq though - you’d be quite right. We even get it on the news over here when someone does something like this in Israel…

However - this is a pretty serious event. 2 Bombs in central London, followed by a jeep carrying gas cylinders and petrol attempting to drive into a crowed airport where 100s of people are congregated… this just doesn’t happen in this country - it’s beyond! Of course it deserves the coverage it’s getting - someone just tried to kill 100s of us. What else should be covered? Wimbledon? Floods (well that’s getting shed loads of coverage and is dreadful - deserves the coverage it gets).

What-ever your political stand point - we are being attacked, directly, and with arms. I’m not going to get into the political debate about if it’s our fault etc etc - but come on… someone just tried to kill 100s of people! How can you call that hype?

How can this be hype?

m

the rumor about mayfair might be true as eariler i was on my way home from luton to kings cross caught a 73 to tottenham court road and walked to marble arch and the traffic was horrendous round hyde park corner

like matt said all rumor atm

police, ambulance, and fire all returning ‘no comment’ about both ‘events’

m

Gotta agree with that, i was brought up in Belfast, where we sometimes had up to 10 carbombs in one day in the city centre (not every day, i must add) We’d be evacuated from our offices and then once the bomb had gone off, or the army defused it or did controlled explosion, the streets would be reopened after a quick cleanup. In the meantime, we’d all be in the pub, having a laugh and playing pool, waiting for the all clear.

Yesterday in London, they found this bomb at 2AM, removed the vehicle from the scene at 10:30AM, but still decided to keep all the roads closed for the entire day. Why?

Only reason i can think of is to generate panic and frighten people unnecessarily. Bull**** if you ask me, but i am a cynic

forensic examination… didn’t need to do it in NI… knew who the enemy was didn’t we.

m

You man enough to say that in Paisley,

I think not

Thanks for the updates.

So we don’t know who the enemy are now then, no?

I hope that was thunder that I could here as I came though my front door just now?

No that’s half the problem isn’t it.

NI was a contained war, where both sides knew ‘the rules’ and for the most part each side knew who was doing what on what side.

In this conflict we don’t know who the enemy are - we ‘think’ it’s Islamic Extremists - but what flavour? From Iraq? Northern Africa? Perhaps Afghanistan… what are the networks? What are they planning next? Is anything connected to anything else.

Of course the other thing to consider is that we can now get a huge amount of forensic evidence that we simply couldn’t even 5 years ago - ask Mad Scientist what’s possible in this day in age. Down side of course is that this takes time and therefore roads are closed.
