tax?

hey, might be a stupid question but im uncertain and am going to ask anyway. What is the deal with regard to dealers selling used bikes with expired tax on them? is it legally allowed? and also will all used bikes come with some form of short warranty from the store? eg 3 months?
awaiting your replies. thank you

No obligation to sell with tax on, but it’s worth bartering re: value of tax. I’d be more worried about state of the bike - check that well, take a mate if necessary - or ask a local LB’er.

Warranty - most offer 3 month min, but as with tax above make sure you talk about both before handing over the cash.

If you are not happy - walk away…always another one.

Good luck.

yeh cheers killer, nah i purchased the bike awhile back and just had a peep at the tax disc as it wasnt on the bike buh was mixed in with my others from other bikes and clocked it expired tiiime ago and was a lil pissed off buh just something the shop shud have said as tax ended 31/08/07 and i got it mid jan 08 :S and also wasnt sure about this whole warranty thing as all my previous bikes have been private sales. dont know if you have seen my other thread about the kawasaki hanger breaking http://londonbikers.com/forums/Topic321502-35-1.aspx and was wondering if they might accept this as a fault under warranty. just an idea

Only had tax included on brand new bikes I’ve bought. Your bikes disc was probably sent back for a refund then SORN by the previous owner or garage where purchased, unbeknown to you.

Warranties aren’t worth the paper they are written on, don’t be fooled into thinking you’ve got a 3 or 6 month warranty to cover anything going wrong. We bought a secondhand bike from a shop, four weeks later the bottom end went. I thought it was covered by the warranty but when they told us to open up the warranty it said …‘up to the value of £300!!!’ … We had to pay over £1k to get the bike running again.

Do your homework before buying, that’s my advice.

ahh okay thanks ang, wasnt certain so thought i would ask. thanks for the info.

You can check on the DVLA site to see if bikes are taxed or sorn/unlicensed.

ahh excellent. thanks mate

on there website it comes up as unlicensed?? i take it i need tax now as in effect i just checked on dvla website and so im sure there system will notify that i have checked and am now aware of it, b*llox

yer I would get it tax’d as the fine will probably cost you more than the tax itself.

also if the person is a trader and selling the bike as a trade item it MUST come with a 3 month warranty… and if something breaks THEY have to prove that they did not know about the problem.

Had that on one of my bikes was brand new and the gear box loxked up after 3 days! they tried to charge me for labour but I told them to get screwed…
the long a short I went to my solicitor and after a rather unpolite letter they decided to drop it all and just get on with the job…
