Taking a mates bike to Europe

Might be biking down to Southern Spain in August, prob over to Santander and back through Cherbourg. Anyway I’m bike less at the moment, might pick up something cheap but if not I might borrow my mates bandit (my old bike anyway). Only 2 concerns I can think of is, obviously log book won’t be in my name, and insurance wise, will they be alright with a named rider taking it abroad?

While I’m at it, any other reg changes, haven’t ridden the continent since 2010…

Thanks.

depends on the insurer. I’d give them a ring to make sure you’re properly covered

definitely contact them (or get him to contact them)

Yeah I will be, its the log book I’m more worried about though, as if I get stopped and I produce it being printed in someone else’s name, must be away round it though because of rental firms etc…

would a signed letter from the actual owner giving you permission to ride work? For things like rental firms you've got a contract of hire...so I'm guessing something similar would help..no expert though.

Yeah maybe, to be honest I’m sure it’d be alright, but I think its a legal requirement to carry the logbook over there and don’t fancy trying to explain something complex to a non english speaking policeman.

Yeah looks like you were right mate, I’ll leave this link up incase anyone else stumbles across the post looking for info. I couldn’t find anything on it yesterday but this seems quite a comprehensive list, so now it just comes down to the insurer, which I think will be fine as long as notified in advance.
