Tail light on Givi top box

Hi all,

With the all-day help of a mate, I finally got the Givi top box fitted and the wires together(ish) for the tail light in the top box. However, it’s not working quite how I expected.

The ER-6f only has one bulb in the rear - it’s a dual filament job and when you brake, the brighter filament comes on. This isn’t great for the box though.

With the box on, the light at the top comes on. Good so far. But when I brake, it goes off. I believe that this is because the normal filament in the bulb is going off.

Ideally, I’d like to get the top box working as tail and brake lights, so that the tail light is on all the time, and gets brighter when I brake. Does anyone know if / how this can be done on this bike ? If not, is there any way that I could have it off most of the time, and go on when I brake?

I’m guessing that the tail / brake light works based on voltage applied, but I can’t see how to use this intelligently for the Givi setup.

Thanks,

Well, this is interesting - I checked with a multimeter today, and I can see that under normal operation, there is 12v coming to the box connectors. Once the brake lever is pulled, there is no voltage present at all - like the circuit is broken.

What confuses me is that the bulb is a single bulb with 3 wires going to it. I can’t understand how voltage is getting to the bulb to light it, but not to the Givi connectors, only when the brake is on.

:ermm:

The simplest way around this is to take the feed for the box from the bike bulb holder and change the bulb in the box for a stop and tail one.

only problem I can see is that the connector from the rack to the box may not have enough contacts.
