For various reasons the bike’s not getting as much use as it was and I’m knocking around the idea of trading it in for something like a DRZ400.
I’d like to be able to take it offroad (in fact that’s the main reason I’m considering a change) but It’d also see service as an occasional commuter & runabout.
I see a few in the classifieds have road & offroad wheels included - how much of a faff is it to change between wheels and is it really worth the effort or will offroad tyres be fine for most circumstances?
I’ve ridden a knobbly tyred DRZ on the road a bit and it felt a bit vague to say the least, probably OK for the occasional commute but presumably a bit hard on the tyres too.
I don’t have a garage so the wheel changes would probably have to be done in the back yard, possibly under a gazebo or something.
I ride my KTM around town on knobblies, while not ideal it’s fine for the occasion use. If I wanted to use it more often I’d spring for a second set of wheels. Mainly as the road tyres would last longer than the knobs and you’ll get a smoother ride.
As for swapping, just get a MX stand and swapping them shouldn’t be too difficult. You might need to change the chain as well if the rear sprocket are a different size if you put SM wheels on, as they are smaller than off-road ones. Someone with more knowledge will answer this better hopefully.
I will say a DRZ is a sort after bike by theiving scrotes
Cheers Nivaq, I was a bit concerned about theft but I don’t intend to get a shiny new one and it’ll be securely locked up off the road at home and at work so hopefully not too much of a risk.
I’m sure the insurance company will make it clear if they think risk of theft is a big issue.
i do it all the time on my dt takes about half hour depending on bike at and will get qicker and quicker the more you do it it used to take me longer as i would have to change my forks over.
this was the snow last year i went home from my nans fitted offroads on then went out to play haha
