It’s nowt more than a mild case of flu. People die from flu all over the world, likely every day of the year.
Radio 1 'News’beat have just led on this ‘outbreak’ with an interview in which a member of the public said, in a very smug tone “well I’m carrying a packet of tissues just in case”
Speaking purely selfishly it’s most reassuring to be on the downward slide for once. Finally there is an upside to getting older :). Bit more worried for my son and wife though- both slap bang in the ‘danger zones’. :crying:
In one of the free rags on the tube yesterday they ran a story with expert opinion on how the underground with a couple of hundred thousand people using it daily could spread the flu faster than you could say pig and that no one would know till they got the sniffles a week later. Dont think they were trying to hype the story really … anyway there were the obligatory pics of people wearing Jackson masks and one of a woman with a sign round her neck with the word INMUNE…I then pondered body odour as I really didnt have much choice and on closer inspection of the persons not only invading my personal space but also occasionally rubbing themselves against me, I became distracted, nay fascinated by the small fine hairs that cover our bodies. I then got off at my station trudged up the hill, got indoors poured myself a glass of wine and got on with life.
To back up Giuliano’s post, the 1918 outbreak killed more people than the the First World War and predominantly hit the young & healthy - there was nowhere to hide, even Arctic explorers/residents died (and their frozen corpses later gave lots of useful information).
You young virile bikers, be afraid, very afraid.
That said, beware of newspapers pushing a story to sell newspapers!
I’d just got over reading about my ASI score (accident survivability index) indicating that I was pretty much doomed if I came off the bike and now I turn up on the steeply rising curve of flu deaths.
Don’t look like I’m going to be around to have a holiday this year at this rate.
