SV650

Afternoon all.

so after being without a bike for a while, I’m hoping I’m going to be getting one within the next couple of weeks.

Hopfully getting the SV650 I’ve always wanted

So I’m currently talking to a guy who has an SV 650 K3 semi faired. 16K miles, done his own work price is low but he has said there is a problem with the speedo, looking at google a very common issue on the bike is a £30 fix… (albeit it could be something more sinister you never know do you).

I’m probably going to pop over and have a look, is there anything I should be looking for, common faults on the SV’s

Cheers in advance and thanks for Daws for retuning his PM

( their comments regarding pipes are rubbish though, mine passes it’s MOT fine with a MIVV can and no baffle )

I’ve got a naked SV650K8 which I use for commuting.

And an excellent commuter it is too.
Light enough and narrow enough to be manoeuvrable in London traffic.
Powerful enough to easily get over 130 mph on the clock (when in IOM).
And they sound luuverly

Check for very noisy cam chains. They all rattle a bit anyway.
Check for decent tyres, the standard D220 tyres are very poor.
I’ve been using PR3s and before that BT023 I think.

The headstock will clunk when going over big bumps, like speed bumps
at over 25 mph, they all do that, the bearings aren’t shagged.

The suspension will feel a bit sloppy if it’s standard and you
do a track day, after all, it is a budget bike. Saying that not many
other bikes got past me when I took mine to the IOM, it can shift
if given a bit of stick.

Excellent for wheelies

GET IT AND ENJOY !

Mike,

many thanks for the link, could help alot.

I’ve wanted an SV since the day I saw them but never been in a position. will meet what I need a good commuter but enough go for a ride out.

Cheers

I like the fact that is is totally standard.

lol cheers, but I must be one of the only 10 people in the UK without a facebook account

The only other thing to look out for is the front spark plug. Muck and rubbish thrown up from the front tyre will cause the drain hole on the right side to clog and the resulting build up of muck and water will short it out causing the engine to run on one cylinder. Pipe cleaner will sort it out, along with a fender extender.

Ohh I’m looking to get a naked SV650 when I pass my DAS as well.

Have you test ridden any? I haven’t got a clue what the seat height and position etc is like yet.

My SV650K8 has twin sparkplugs for each pot and a rubber flap
over the front cylinder lower plug, I’ve also got an extension on
the bottom of the front mudguard, which may have been added
by the previous owner.

So I don’t get the “single cylinder in the wet” problem.

I’m not sure when Suzuki introduced the 4 sparkplug SV650 ?

Dual spark was introduced in 2007

I’m in the middle of buying my 1st big bike, and looks like I’m picking up a SV650S after test riding a a few.

The seat height on the SV is very low (I can reach the floor much easier than on my CBF125) and it is incredibly light maybe just a tiny bit more than the CBF but a feather weight in comparison to a XJ6 Diversion or GSX650f. The position is a bit leaned forward but not too radical. Front forks seemed very squishy but that is a known issue that is easily upgradable.

I might add a question myself. What exhaust should I put on it?

I brought my son an old SV 650 2001 I think

good bike not going to break any records but easy to drive and handles ok brakes feel a little shyte but im going to look into that

its got s Fuel can on the back sounds nice for a twin

couple of things that go wrong

Reg/Rectifier (more so on older curvy’s)

Alternator- magnets let go sometimes, more common on the 1000

They use oil, keep an eye on it.

behind the front sprocket there is an O ring seal, it sometimes lets go, you get a small drop or two of oil beneath the sprocket cover, watch out for it, easy fix.

Cam Chain Tensioners- not that common, but any really loud ticking/rattling it may be it.

if you get it, you will love it.

I FUCKING LOVE SV’S!
