SV650 Busted Engine? Worth Buying?

Originally posted this in Q&A, but thought it might fit here better:

Evening all,

Someone I know bought a T reg SV650 a few months ago from Bat Motorcycles - he paid £2,700 (we all thought that was over the top).

He was riding the other day, not going particularly fast, when the engine started making a loud knocking sound. He killed the engine and gave it a few minutes and as soon as he turned it on, it made the same sound again, so he got the AA out to take him home.

The AA dude apparently said he thought it might have been either the big end gone or a break further up the crank.

This fella’s already gone out and bought himself a brand new GSX-F so he’s looking to get rid of th SV.

I’m thinking that with the help of a couple of bike-savvy family members, even if I had to bung a new engine in it, we could do that.

Would anyone like to hazard a different guess than the one the AA dude put forward?

I’d just like to have a few options in mind before I offer this fella a few quid for the bike.

Cheers in advance

bought a 2002 reg, bout 9000miles for £1700…your mate sure paid a fair bit by the looks of it;)…

Yeah - a week after he bought it, MCN bought one for some test or another and pais £2k for an S reg - without being too harsh, I think they saw him coming

**…I think they saw him coming **

How unusual for a used motorcycle dealer.
