Suspension Advice Please?

hopefully this is the right section to be posting this sort of thing…

So I know nothing whatsoever about suspension setup. The only thing I can adjust on my bike (old style 600 Fazer) is the rear shock preload. It has 9 incremental steps with no1 being the least amount of preload and it’s on 5 at the moment

I know it’s probably best to try things out but can anyone advise me on what I should be looking out for? How should the bike feel, what should improve with adjustments etc…
I’m 12st and don’t often carry pillion, just a top box with a few kilos inside

Cheers!

OK, if preload is the only adjustment you have, then you’re limited to altering ride height / static sag
You can set up your bike so that the rear sag is around 30mm, which is a good starting point.
There’s loads of guides on the internet on how to set sag :

Mike Dawson of J9 Motorcycles (on LB) has just sorted out my suspension and its lovely.
Wish I had done it properly ages ago. Various kind souls did their best for me last year (by clicking and turning things I can never fully understand) but in the end the springs needed to be changed for my weight.
He said he is doing half price suspension consultations for LB members (so £25 plus vat I think) and he is at Junction 9 of the M25 in Leatherhead.
I am totally biased of course but it would be worth getting it looked at properly
