Surrey Bikers

SERV are looking for volunteer riders in the Surrey area, even if you can spare only one evening a week to be on call. See the site for more information and an application form.

The site says on night a month, but I suppose they need more than that if they are recruiting.
I’d be up for it, but I get lost going round a roundabout, never mind following a prescribed route.
That’s not a cop-out, I just wouldn’t want someone’s life being put at risk due to my pants sense of direction.

I am up for it…have been in touch…sounds like a lot of fun…

Nice one TSLO.

They do an orientation day where they’ll take you around some of the routes and make sure you know everything you need to know. The emphasis is always on safety…

i did this back in the early 90’s was a good thing to do, if i remember you only go to certain hospitals and follow a route so that if something should happen the other riders can quickly find where you are.

is it still based round the back of new malden high street???

There seems very little on the site on what the actual commitment is in terms of time and money. When Jackie and I looked into this nearly 20 years ago, and again about 12 years ago the costs of taking out insurance for what insurers considered the same risk as a commercial motorcycle courier was prohibitive for what was meant to be a twice a month volunteer activity. Has any of that changed? Social, domestic and pleasure + commuting certainly doesn’t cover it.

It is still in New Malden, and still sharing premises with MEFAS whoo I see still do the Save a Life courses every Thursday evening. It is not exactly FBOS but does teach you stuff on how to keep someone alive until help arrives.
