Strange indicator problem.

Hey guys. i have a friend who has just asked me about a strange problem she is having with her indicators. I had no clue but wondered if you lot could help details bellow.

Just before Christmas my indicators wouldn’t flash, once i turned them on they would stay on on. I bought a new indicator relay and replaced it. After testing it it seems to work and it now flashed. However, the weird part is the indicators will only work under 20mph. I have tried revving the engine and it still works, the problem is unrelated to rpm. I have put the bike into gear whilst on the stand and let the wheel spin, the indicators still work. The indicators only stop working whilst the bike is on the road and on the move. I am puzzled and can not fix the issue until i find a problem to fix !

Can anyone help ?

clean all the connections and make sure the earth connection is ok

As above, Undo the conectors and clean each terminal to get a proper metal to metal connection and also check the earth is good.

Can’t understand why it happens under load, the only thing that would cause that would be a faulty Alternator but don’t see why that would only affect the Indicators

turn it off and on again.
failing that, give it a kick.

vibrations cause it. indicates a broken connection somewhere. nothing strange about it. needs rewiring.

I vote for vibrations too. bad ones, not good vibrations.

Damn those bad vibrations. thanks for the advice guys I will pass it on.

What sort of bike is it?

I had a Yam 900 in the 90s that had self cancelling indicators.
They worked from sensors that measured how far you had
travelled and the slight turning of the handle bars.

A right royal pain

Very rarely did they cancel when I wanted them to, they would
often cancel too early or not at all.

Vibrations on bikes do strange things. Spent for ever trying to find the cause of a slight mis-fire on a Ducati years ago. Only happened when it was in gear. Eventually turned out to be the ignition switch contacts vibrating in and out of contact over about a 100 - 200 r.p.m. band.

As has been said. Eliminate the obvious dirty contacts and any iffy wiring first, then look carefully at the indicator switch and contacts. After that … pass.

road speed sensor earthing through your indicator circuit?
