Was going to put this in the stolen bike section but probably a bit over dramatic for that.
I was leading a rather nice matt black, Ducati (panigale syle) road bike along the
M4 east bound & Chelsea embankment earlier.
Noticed he had lost his plate. He wasnt riding it like he stole it, (sticking to sensible speeds etc) so figured all was legit.
Anyway, mentioned it to him at the lights & turns out he’d had it nicked.
I just thought i’d mention it, in case anyone goes looking to buy a nice Ducati with an immaculate number plate.
I know its common for cars to be cloned like this but not heard of bike plates being nicked before.
i meet a guy in croydon parking a cbr up once and he took off his plate and placed it into his bag i asked how comes? he said hes had his plate stolen twice in croydon and had speeding tickets and police knocking on his door about running from the police or something.
I had my car plates nicked a few years back. Reported it to the police. It was a bit weird as they were personalised & stand out a bit. Think it was kids. Probably hanging on some scrots bedroom wall somewhere lol. Fitted with special locking screws now.
Over the years, Ive had my car wheel trims nicked before & my radio ariel. With the wheel trims, they were so knackered, it was only the cable ties that were holding them together! Totally worthless.
Plates are sometimes put on a clone car/bike to evade detection prior to use in robberies etc.
My plate disappeared off the bike outside the house (covered up too) last year.
After that, I bought some anti-tamper screws, although had to add some plastic blocks I had lying around (the type you use to strengthen right angle wooden cabinets etc…) so they had something to screw into behind the tail.
I did report to the police, but never heard anything further about it, even though they pointed out there was a risk I might get pulled over in the next 3 months or so, especially in central London.
The two uses people mentioned for these plates were for nicking fuel (a few car plates have been lifted in the street in the past possibly for this purpose), or for entering the congestion charge zone for free (although the plates would be an odd shape for most cars).
