Stolen Car

Sorry to post this in here, just having a nightmare time. Knocked off 5 weeks ago badly and bike written off. Due to being off work as a result having to sell car. Posted it on Auto Trader, first person came to view it yesterday and subsequently stole it last night after cloning/ copying/ swapping the key.
Thought it was worth while posting this here in case anyone sees it flying around.

linky for sale advert on here: http://londonbikers.com/forums/Topic805889-41-1.aspx

Model: VW Golf GT170 SILVER
Registration: FD07 GJO

They were clearly professionals who nicked it last night between 19.30 and 00.30, so Id imagine the plates were switched immediately and suspect its in a million pieces by now, but worth a shot I guess.

Holy crap thats a bit harsh, and you met the stealer too. double insult. How did they do the key thing?

Asked to check it the spare key worked, so I gave it to him to check. Obviously somehow did a quick swap. I told them that I was selling it because of the accident and that I needed funds due to being off work and they were really sympathetic. They BOTH shook my hand and thanked me for being so hekpful and honest - thats the insult.

well on the bright side, you will be getting a cheque in 30 or so days from your insurance company.

What bike are you going to get?

too soon?

haha. I wish! The massively under valued the bike… I also had to pay the excess which was deducted from the cheque… Excess was £600! OUCH!!

At the moment I can’t afford to replace all my gear as it was all top of the range alpinestars stuff with a brand new Shoei helmet - which the paramedics had to cut off. So I can’t afford to buy safety gear to ride in - therefore no bike! :frowning:

lifes sh1t then you die… :cries:

its quite old now but common way to steal a car.

**** me, that’s totally crap!

Holy foook that’s shocking :frowning:

You’ll get some better luck soon, for sure!

So they swapped the spare key with a random key when you handed it to them? So will the insurance pay out or will it be like when you leave the key in the ignition at a petrol station?

That’s rotten luck. I guess at least you were able to give the police a good description of the two of them…and you will get something from insurance right?

What a shame mate! hope you get it back. Have you done all the formalities with the cops?

bad luck mate. I’ve got a few bits and bobs gear-wise if you need to borrow.

Expect a battle over insurance as they will argue you gave up custody over the key and many policies these days have an absolute exclusion for any theft using access to the keys. An important lesson though which I will remember. Show any buyer that the keys work, never hand them over. If you must hand over a key, make sure it is not switched. Mark it before handing it over with a sticker etc. Check it works whilst they are till there. If they get away and the key you are left with doesn’t work. Make sure the car is moved so they can’t find it until you can get the security reprogrammed etc.
