Stiff gearbox on R1200GS

I’ve had an '08 R1200GS for a couple of months now & love it…

Have noticed over the past few weeks though that in the mornings, the gear box is very stiff (e.g. getting from first into neutral is difficult during the first mile or two/5 mins of riding), but it ‘loosens’ up & is fine once riding…

I’m not sure, but I think it’s getting worse as time goes by - is this something to be worried about/have looked at?

Cheers,

Dave

is the clutch disengaging fully? it may need bleeding…

when i bike is had to get into grear or neutral its normaly because theres still slight load on the grear box…

lets hope its that or something simple, gearbox work gets expencive!!

Clutch clearance/function is always the first thing to check. It’s easy and free.

Next. BMW seem to have consistently under specified gearbox oil since about 1976/77. I used SAE 80, rather than the SAE 40 recommended, in my old air head and most of the “brick” people did much the same. Some even using SAE 120.

Try a gloopier oil. The worst that can happen is there is no improvement and you have to change back.

I thought SAE 80/90 was specced for the gearbox and bevel box on the R series. Tis on my R1100S. Check level anyway. Clutch bleed first and/or replace the clutch fluid. Should sort it.

Just checked and you’re right. Must be getting old.

SAE 80 specified, it was me that used SAE 120 and some used gloopier stuff than that, up around SAE 160/180, the stuff you need to stand in boiling water before you can pour it into the gearbox.

they all do that, just push the bike forward whilst sitting astride it,and at the same time push the lever into first gear, takes practise, but you basicly have a straight cut gearbox with a car clutch, sometimes the cogs dont marry up.Answers here

i go on there daily,my 1150 is exactly the same.
