Long distance running used to be my thing, was crap at sprinting. Not as fit as I was when I was at school but I do have two runs planned this year for Cancer Research, 5k run next month and a 10k run in September.
I was a sprinter and a long-distance runner. I was crap at the 400m and 800m events, though: too fast to be a jog, too far for an all-out sprint.
I’ve heard that when Linford Christie takes part in the Dads’ race at his kids’ sports day, he runs ** as fast as he possibly can ** . Must be a tad disheartening to have kids in the same class as his…
I was never any good at athletics type things, I was more of a team sports kind of guy, Rugby, Football & Cricket. My son’s first sports day is coming up. I’m rather sad that I’m at work, and due to overspending my annual leave allowance, I can’t take the day off. On the plus side it means I won’t be humiliated in any of the parent races…my son’s school is within a Military estate, and most of the Dads, and some of the Mums are squaddies, who obviously do a lot of training
I’m in 6th form but in my previous school i was the best at Javelin, still think I’ve got the record, and i also won the districs cup (which my teacher still owes me) with javelin.
The mile, where I was moderately capable. Thank the lord there were a few realy good guys at the same time so I never had to do anything more than the school stuff.
All that Saturday area and county stuff passed me by so I could get on with the paper round, butchers round and anything else that fueled my bikes for time trials.
Rugby, beach hockey, swimming and athletics I was force to do the 200m and 800m. I did end up enjoying the 800m, wasn’t fast enough for the sprints and not enough stamina for the longer distances. Just right for the 800m.
Absolutely no chance that I could do it, but I can still swim 4KM in less than an hour (but not at the moment do to the ribs).
Middle distance running, I still have all my sports day certificates from junior school & up until the 3rd year in senior school, then we got bored. In my 5th year at senior school we all boycotted the sports day, much to the anger of our teachers, we were more interested in our mopeds - but that was back in the days of anarchy in the uk.
Havn’t got any certificates for the Egg & spoon race though :hehe:
I did hurdles for my school in the district cup but only cos no other looser in my school would do it! We were the school that came last in everything. And I did my school proud by regulaly coming last in hurdles
Competed at national level at 400m when I was 15/16 and was very good over hurdles over 80m and 100m. People said my niche would be 400m hurdles
Was predicited to compete for GB at the olympics, but quit for an education - what a div :crying: now am unfit and am too injury prone from over training at a young age probably.
