Something of a worry or our guilty secret?

Be honest, how many of you knew these signs?

I didn’t know about the “bikes being pushed” exception on the No Vehicles sign but other than that fine. I do know though that if I took this home and asked the rest of the drivers in the family the result would probably be more similar to the survey. I was that little boy in the back of the car that kept asking “what does that sign mean?”, annoying to the point of that only now with a 3 year old of my own do I comprehend

^^ same here. problem isn’t the signs, the problem is lack of knowledge. People only learn just enough to pass their test then it’s a free-for-all.

I’ve often said re-tests should be mandatory after 2 years then every 10 years after that. Maybe then we wouldn’t get pensioners driving the wrong way on the motorway.

first thing my instructor told me was “I am going to teach you to pass the test, NOT how to ride on the road!” - Quota culture. THe results and the quality are UTTERLY unimportant.

See also thee NHS, the management of the police force and education, the Army and so forth.

PR, lawyers, scandal obsessed media and “statistics” have turned this country into a third rate joke.

Right now I am looking to take my family overseas.

Britain should be called Shitain… it IS that bad! At the very least calling it “Great” is utterly unjustified these days

Come on all you Nancy ball addicts, whose veins are clogged with fried pig meat and baked beans, who still suck on the teat of Royalty cos you’re too stupid to understand that an elected leader that you call “Your Highness” and who is UTTERLY UNREPROACHABLE without staging a military coup in a democracy is a JOKE, come on FLAME ME… come on, please… tell me this **** hole is what you’re so proud of… and the first person to whine about how if I don’t like I should get out, please READ the thread above, don’t just dribbble on it.

Where you looking to move Tobi? When you find utopia be sure to let us know where it is…

(I sympathise with most of your views - just not so sure there are many places much different? Maybe Canada, but it’s cold and they still suck up to Queeny - or Aus, but it’s full of Aussies. Thinking of South Africa myself…though mainly due to the cost of living / lifestyle / climate - rather than anything else. )

That opening sentence needs editing… (unless there’s a photo or sth I can’t see) because it starts with “has revealed” so we don’t know what has revealed

Those signs seemed pretty standard?

The example signs they pick out illustrate the problem.

I would have known the precise meaning of these when I passed my driving test 25 years ago but I would also have known A-level statistics. If either have been sufficiently important in my later life to remember I’m sure I would have done…

You need to know the road signs you come across everyday and I must admit I should know what these all are but the blank circle with the red border and the blue circle crossed through with the red border don’t really convey anything. The red suggests you shouldn’t do something…but what? The first says ‘no vehicles’ underneath, which is clear enough, so why can’t the second say ‘no waiting’ under it? The no motor vehicles is much more obvious…red for ‘No’ and a picture of a bike and car…but again to maintain the logic these should also be crossed through!

A visual sign should give some clue as to what they are supposed to be conveying otherwise what is the point of a visual sign?

They’d be better off replacing ‘Urban Clearway’ with ‘No Stopping!’ in big letters with a smaller sign beneath reading ‘except between 4.30pm and 4.45pm’ or ‘except to pick up passengers’ or such-like.

‘Urban clearway’ has no obvious meaning.

Just because fifty years ago some graphic designer (and by all accounts it was just one person) thought this was the best way to do it doesn’t mean it is.

OK, maybe I can understand somebody not knowing what the no waiting sign means but how can anyone not understand the correct lanes sign? - it’s a picture of 3 lanes with an arrow in each, what else could it mean?

I never even read the Urban Clearway letters… all I paid attention to was the no-waiting sign, the dates and hours

Haha Tobi, a standup comic will steal some of your text for material. I knew most of those signs. In Holland the theory test includes a lot of ambiguous signs so you have to know them all or you’ll fail. The driving test in Holland also teaches you how to drive. If you can’t then you won’t pass. The assessor doesn’t sit there with a checklist either. They observe your driving and make a decision as to whether your standard is acceptable.

I think the geneal standard of driving in the UK is worse than in Holland. That is immediately evident on motorways. In Holland motorway is a compulsory part of your driving lessons and your test. I still cannot get my head around how you can pass your test in the UK, having never been on a motorway.

You are also taut in your lessons to get out of the way of faster traffic on the motorway and if you don’t check your mirrors correctly and pull out into the the path of a BMW doing 3 figures in mph you are marked down. There so many drivers in the UK that seem to think they are vigalantie police. /rant

I still remember when I cam to this country and was doing the mock tests for my car and I saw the sign Ford. Being greek I had no clue what a ford was…
