Soldiers christmas

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,
HE LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF
PLASTER AND STONE.
I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY
WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,
AND TO SEE JUST WHO
IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.
I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,
A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,
NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,
NOT EVEN A TREE.
NO STOCKING BY MANTLE,
JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES
OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.
WITH MEDALS AND BADGES,
AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,
A SOBER THOUGHT
CAME THROUGH MY MIND.
FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT,
IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER,
ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.
THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING,
SILENT, ALONE,
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR
IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.
THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE,
THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER,
NOT HOW I PICTURED
A SOLDIER.
WAS THIS THE HERO
OF WHOM I’D JUST READ?
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO,
THE FLOOR FOR A BED?
I REALIZED THE FAMILIES
THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS
WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.
SOON ROUND THE WORLD,
THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE
A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.
THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM
EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,
LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.
I COULDN’T HELP WONDER
HOW MANY LAY ALONE,
ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE
IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.
THE VERY THOUGHT
BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE,
I DROPPED TO MY KNEES
AND STARTED TO CRY.
THE SOLDIER AWAKENED
AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
“SANTA DON’T CRY,
THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;
I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM,
I DON’T ASK FOR MORE,
MY LIFE IS MY GOD,
MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS.”
THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER
AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,
I COULDN’T CONTROL IT,
I CONTINUED TO WEEP.
I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS,
SO SILENT AND STILL
AND WE BOTH SHIVERED
FROM THE COLD NIGHT’S CHILL.
I DIDN’T WANT TO LEAVE
ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR
SO WILLING TO FIGHT.
THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,
WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,
WHISPERED, “CARRY ON SANTA,
IT’S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE.”
ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH,
AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.
“MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,
AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT.”

My unit is out in afghan at the moment, each of us that is left behind are each wrtting to atleast 2 people so they all receive letters and at christmas a parcel even though we expect they will have other friends and family sending them things its always good and ofcourse they are guys we all work and get on with.

If anybody would like to send small gifts to them for x-mas im sure it will brighten things up for them even more, i know id like it if i was out there but unfortunatley im stuck back here even though i begged to go, still time yet though… anyway i know 2 of the guys are bikers too. If anybody would like to send them something pm me. Obviously im not gona give out any sensitive info on here so i would have to vet you first, lmao. Any bike mags you’ve finished with aswell im sure would be apreciated by some, if they’ll actualy get time to read them is a different matter.

That gets me every time mate! :crying:

Awesome idea for the presents/cards etc… out of the 8 years I spent in the Army, I spent 6 Christmas/New Year periods on foreign soil, some on Ops some not… So, I can appreciate the feeling a simple card can give you.

Just getting a card can make a huge difference to the morale of our troops!

Good stuff ASBO!

I’ll be putting together a couple of ‘Christmas Boxes’ myself to post out to my mate who’s in Afghan, if I’ve got anything left over from them I’ll PM you with details.

Brilliant poem by the way, makes me proud.

In fact, this gives me an idea. I might even do something bigger, get friends at College to put together some stuff…

great poem mate, PM me with the info for the christmas thingy, btw what reig you in? im 151st RLC (T.A.)

Vet corp… MWD’s

A pm shall be sent, i not got the details with me atm they are at work.

Thanx to all

I’m Ex-RAF. Never went abroad because my trade was specialised and couldn’t be moved about. However, we all begged to have dets and said we’d do driving and guard duties just to get away and do our part. I was medically downgraded a few months before it was all approved…I was so pissed off!! :crying:

I’ve seen the poem before and it always makes me cry. Its very powerful.
If you PM me the stuff you’d like sent out, I’ll send you all the details of where I worked so you know I’m genuine. Then let me know what to do and where to send it. I’ll see if I can get some stuff from people in work as well.

Cheers Jools… I have my intelligence officer on the case of telling me if people are genuine, well the next best thing anyway :hehe:

I spent one xmas on the streets of N.I.

It wasn’t all bad, we we’re back inside for the second episode of Eastenders.

Hey Asbo - Don’t know if you remember, we met at Ally Pally. I’m RAF, that poem did the rounds while I was in Baghdad from Aug 07 - Feb 08. Saw some tough SF types break down while reading that.

PM me mate with your unit address and believed rtu dates.

I’ll send you my name, rank and number!
