Small motorcyle sized socket set.

Does anyone know of a nice minaturised wrench and socket set handy for getting into tight spaces - I’m having a right shag trying to get the plugs out of my Yam T ace - this job is commonly acknowledged by owners of this bike to be a right pain in the tits due to space restriction and an awkwardly designed engine cover.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

I got a set at one of the bike shows, dead cheap too  Get yourself to Ally pally on the weekend.

Cheers Shewoolf - i’ll check it out.

ZX7R motors are a real pain to reach the plugs. You need a socket with very thin walls. Good luck finding one!

If you want a really miniature set of great quality go for one of the teng tools sets, had mine for years and use it all the time.

i did some work on a z750 the other night! and if its anything the same? the space to get to the centre plugs was ridiculas,

so I loosened the water pump to free up some space and got a 10" extension to a normal ratchet and put it all the way through past the water pump and hoses all the way to a 17mm socket onto a spark plug wrench.

The trick is getting the wrench off the plugs and out after youve tightened them up  good luck  I used pliers just to nip the wrench and pull it back out wasnt too bad :stuck_out_tongue:

Cheers fellas - you think kwaks are bad - you want to try doing it on a Yam thunderace - they expect you to drain the coolant and remove the rad to get to the plugs for pete’s sake! - working out how to do it without removing the rad (which can be done some say) is like being on the fuggin krypton factor!

If you think bikes are a pain in the arris, try mid engined super cars. How about dropping the rear suspension off to get at the spark plugs.

Right, if you want good quality, thin walled, sockets, your going to have to pay good money.

In decending quality/price order: Snap on, Britool, Teng. If you aint gonna use them day in day out, like Zeph11 said, go buy Teng.

Slightly off subject, they do a 3/8" set called “Mecca Rosso” that drops nicely into the bike tool box which, with plug spanner and a screw driver/hexagon bits set added is almost all you need for a full service. Not ultra cheap but v.good value. (Try Screwfix for all of that.)

Cheers Oldguy - i’ll check those brands out - when i’ve got some more money I’m gonna put together a really slick tool set along those lines. in the meantime I got a nice little stubby rachet and extension to do the job plus a proper spark plug socket.

What you were saying about cars reminds me of some of my mates horror stories servicing 70’s Alfas and Lancias - zero thought given to ease of maintenance with people forced to remove major components to do simple jobs.

Been meaning to do that myself for the last 45 years, just too tight fisted to throw away the cheap(ish) sh*t that works. I’d like to say that replacement stuff I buy is now bought on quality but the sad thing is, I still buy on price.

Once a cheap skate, always a cheapskate.

Oh, forgot to mention Halfrauds. Their “professional” range is also good. If you buy in a sale.
