Should I leave?

Hmmm not sure why I’m posting this but here goes, got a good job in the city, pays well BUT I’m incredibly bored with it I keep thinking of resigning each day and frankly I think I will. Problem is it may take me a few months to find another job and thats a big risk but staying here much longer will drive me nuts. Its a nice place to work no hassle etc so I feel really stupid contemplating leaving but I really want a job thats a bit more demanding etc. Passing the time of day in an office just seems to be draining the life out of me.

I don’t mind another office job as long as its busy and has lots of stuff to do, so should I just up sticks and leave or do you have strategies for keeping occupied and keeping the day job even if you want to go?

I’ve job hopped every 2 years or so before so I know I can get another job but it just seems dumb to want to leave a good job???

quit… we work to live, not the other way around!

just remember one thing (well 2 things)

better to be quite and get paid rather than bored at home with no pay

and the other which is the killer LAST IN FIRST OUT !!!

Know exactly what you mean, my job is terrible, the pay isn’t bad but I don’t know how much longer I can take it. Every week at least once I think I’ll leave and find a temp job for the interim, really getting me down.

Don’t know what the answer is though? Can you afford to be out of work for a couple of months?

Start to work in construction industry. Become a carpenter, electrician or plumber. Good money and no more problems with boring office job anymore
If you hate your existing job, quit. Good luck with job finding!

not its not good money any more as the pols and eastern europeans are taking all the work now cheap labour.

have you every looked at a building site at lunch time.

its the same as the courier industry brazilians have taken over as they are cheap

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence! Untill you get there and look back…

Stay where you are until you find something else.

i know exactly how u feel…

my last job, well, my boss really never drove me insane, and it took me a while to find sumthing new cause i was tied down to 2 mths notice. Had thought many times bout telling him to stick it, but had to bite my tongue.

at end of day, unless u got huge savings, everyone has bills to pay

better to sit tight, and look more intesively for new jobs.

I work in an office to, and quite frankly, it bores the hell outa me.

the work is quite interesting, but just being stuck in all day, in front of a computer screen is boring. Ive job hopped myself, and i suppose the time will come when you either decide enough is enough and try something completely different, or just accept the fact that its a job, it pays well and u can use the money to buy the things you love!

Why would it take you a few months to find something new? Job market in admin & IT in City is quite bouyant, as I understand. If you’re a professional something or other, surely you should stay until you find something else.

In my early twenties, I was a legal secretary and was bored stupid - good pay, great colleagues tho. Had no mortgage and decided to leave the job after 18 months (target date fixed) to do a month’s German course in Dusseldorf. Had a great time, got a great job on my return and still hail it as the best thing I did - despite all my friends and family advising otherwise.

Now I’m tied to the office with good salary, have a huuuuge mortgage and couldn’t do anything similar any more. But am very happy with my house.

stay in your current job, while looking for something better. thats the best option and employers like it when you have a current job, rather than being unemployed.

I’ve also been in the same predicament. I have a good job, decent money and it’s only a few miles from home. Yep, it’s boring and the company itself is questionable but I get paid every month and I’m not stressed. Sometimes I have to have a chat with myself so I can appreciate what I do have!

A few years ago I made a change and moved from accounting into property. Very very demanding. You get paid a low basic with commission on top and it’s amazing how much pressure that adds to a job. I really enjoyed the job itself but after 2.5 years moved back to accounting for the security!

Sound advice from peeps, I can afford not to work for a few months so that would be ok, Im in IT so yes it may not take that long to get a job but I have been burned before where I couldn’t find which makes me wary. What annoys me is Im not some naieve youngster anymore that thinks jobs grow on trees and yet I’m still thinking like a petulent teenager about how bored I am ffs

Just to add though I think this is a trick the city and employers play on you - Don’t give up the day job as you may not get another, tbh if you’re that scared of losing the job what happens when you do? Most people get binned at some pont so at least by moving Im showing flexibilty and the desire to move on with life etc.

Its a right catch 22, stay and be safe but get stuck in a rut and make yourself less employable in future or move and take a risk whith better benefits (hopefully) but alot less security for the first year or so…

Im only 34 , I’m not dead and lifes for the living - risk it is…

If you’re in IT and thinking about moving jobs…the best thing you can do is blow the budget on some fancy schmancy Identity or Systems Management software first. Just so happens I have some here just looking for a new owner

Can’t blame a guy for trying eh!!!

You chat with yourself?? hehehe, you nutter!

I know, but it has to be done if I get in one of those I feel sorry for myself moods

Talk to yourself? I have to ask people to turn the volume down so I can hear the voices in my head

Jack it in . Life is way too short to spend most of it climbing the walls. Do something different it’ll be an adventure. You have nothing to lose in the long run, never met anyone who looked back on thier life and said, I’m glad I had a nice safe secure boring existance. Go on take a chance. Oh yeah, good luck…

Heres my two pennnies worth of advise.

1- Happy in current job = yes = stay, no = leave

2- Job now too easy = in comfort zone = make of it what you can, set some goals, go push some boundaries to your current role, duties see how the boss reacts. Might gain from it with more reponsibilities, advancement, cash etc.

3- Cant or dont want to do point 2 = leave

3- Tell your boss you are thinking of leaving as per reasons in point 2 = See how he reacts to you. Wrong reaction = Consider leaving and get another job (In your prefered order of course)

4- Even if money is not an issue = As above make some demands, push some boundaries on that comfort zone you are in (Namely negotiate some additional responsibilities+Cash) = Cant be arsed = leave and get another job

A Job is what you make of it so make of it what you will take it outside the comfort zone. You will be surprised how much it can spice up your work. Pushing boundaries normally involves someon elses patch, so beware you may find you need to use some new people skills so ask yourself are you ready…
