Has anyone had their shock rebuilt?
If so, did it work? Was it worth it?
Am I right in thinking it can’t be done in my home workshop, because it’s full of gas?

The shock is full of gas, not my workshop.
Think you need to specialist equipment to sort a shock and the knowledge or could **** it or yourself…
I think shocks are full of oil, rather than gas.
It is spring loaded so not exactly safe to work around unless you know what you are doing.
Take it to OMC, I know that weefrenchie off of this site did her front shocks at OMC, with I am sure a little help from Matt. If a girl can do I am sure you can…
Oh man, I am going to suffer for those words
Front forks are a different kettle of fish, I can rebuild them no problem.
Pretty sure rear shocks are full of nitrogen. I doubt OMC will have the facilities to sort them out, I’m not sure but I think you’ve got to drill into them, replace the fluids, seals, gas, then put it all back together. Actually thinking about it I’m quite sure I don’t have the facilities or knowhow to do it.
So has anyone used one of those shock rebuild services?
Rear shocks tend to be filled with gas. I wouldn’t drill into unless you want some fun.
Depending on the make you could send it back to the manufacturer to get it refurbished, otherwise a specialised company might be able to help.
Had mine done a few years back by Kais - they did a post service, send yours in they strip, clean, service, rebuild & set for £100+vat (about 5yrs ago so probably a little more now) they did same deal with my forks - new oil, seals, spring packers cut to set springs for ideal weight etc etc,
Well worth it IMO mate
Thanks Doof
Sounds like good value so I’ll get in touch with Kais!
Practical Sportsbike did a ‘rebuild a rear shock’ article in their October 2011 edition, no mention of compressed gases just oil. The article was more about rebuilding supposedly “un-rebuildable” shocks but I’d have thought it still relevant, might be worth a look just to see if you’d feel capable?

Thanks Ian!
I’ll see if I can get hold of a back issue… Don’t suppose you’ve got it lying about somewhere?
MTC come highly recommended and they’ve quoted me
“A shock service would be £104 + VAT, and that includes the additional £15 to fit a schrader valve into the reservoir bottle to regas the shock.”
ABE in london greenwich also do rebuilds, have a google for post in other forums, sure I read of a few people who had this done there.
It just so happens that I do Conrad, you don’t think for a moment I remembered the date!
I’ll scan the article and send it on if you so desire, email me at iandundryatyahoodotcom and I’ll forward a copy to you.
Cheers
Ian
