Sharp helmet test scores ..

Whats this then?

http://sharp.direct.gov.uk/testhelmetlist?sharp-make=133&sharp-model=&sharp-type=All&sharp-rating=1&discontinued=1

its the way its done, where its.done on the lid, also htheres no sense that a.polycarbonate.helmet.can outscore superior materials like fiberglass carbon fire mixes, shoei’s quality control is beyond belief, i wear agv K3, it fits me perfectly, hence i know it will do itss job, test

posting from my phone so bit short explanatio. will.post up again latered one.before lol, shoei imo, are one of if not the best made.lids.

The only thing that laughable about SHARP is that they don’t keep it up to date. Whats laughable about putting a certain force on different pressure points of a lid?

Furthermore, all helmets are subjected to the same test so it doesn’t matter how stupid the test is in your eyes as every helmet has an equal chance. If the test was to drop a helmet from 5 metres then that would be inconclusive as the helmet has different aerodynamic qualities, different weight, may land in a different area, etc. With sharp testing every helmet is hit in a certain place using a controlled mechanical force. The only thing SHARP doesn’t tell you is if its going to be your lucky day… Never know you may buy a helmet that is supposed to be 5* that falls apart in a couple of days.

Exactly less than 50% off the shoei’s get 5 stars

you produce & test helmets?

The people saying SHARP are a waste of time are those who spent hundreds on a top dollar helmet. Buying into the hype that Arai are the best helmet. Just because they cost the most.

The testing is as far as I know independent, and I am sure experts had their input into how the tests are done.

AGV and Shark amongst others of the mid price range seem to have achieved good scores.

The tests measure how much force is felt in the centre of the lid by the sensor “brain”. They test 32 times on the same lid at all kinds of angles. Its not realistic in that you need your lid to save you once then you’ll replace it. I also wonder how much difference in the forces measured between the green and black colour bands. Do they publish that?

I’ve tested a shoei xr1000, left rear lower part of the lid was smashed. Crumpled to absorb force and I was knocked the **** out. No concussion, busted lid, still alive

I dont think the sharp tests break the helmets structure. That would mean buying 32 of each lid if tested to destruction! They provide a minimum safety standard that someone is testing however.

So at least they are testing the helmets dont crumble by their tests which is a good thing. But I dont think it proves an arai is less protective than a shoei. The shoei might transmit a little less force to your brain on the side impacts - never a bad thing? - but how much less? shrug

SHARP has had it’s critics and yes most of them appeared to be from within the established helmet industry which was of course turned upside down by the test results - the Nitro test I believe was the one which made all the headlines. Most manufactures/distributors use performance statistics like a drunk uses a lamp post - for support rather than illumination.

I always meant to do some digging into this testing system and see if there was any real truth to the opposing views that a) it speaks the truth or b) it’s a load of cobblers.

Sadly I don’t have time but I do know a tame journalist who might be interested in doing some digging for us in a wee while (clue).

The X Spirit & XR1000 have been superseded by X Spirit II and XR1100, are no longer made but are still available, due to the high volume made as they were so popular. The Multitec, being a flip front (system) has just been replaced by the Neotec, which hasn’t been tested. Until recently, NO, flip front lid had five stars, due to the side impact test and the placement of the flip mechanism. And there is only 1 which has 5 stars. The cheaper lids reinforced the sharp impact areas to gain a higher score, but at the cost of weight.

Just as those extolling SHARPS virtues are justifying why their budget choice It’s horses for courses. All said and done, everyone has a certain budget at the end of the day, and you buy the best that you can afford. The important thing is that the lid fits you properly.

I had a look I found a Marushin £90 helmet rated higher than a Schubert S1 Pro. I know which one I’d rather be wearing.

i’ve spoken at length about it with shoei’s top helmet technichan, shoei do not display sharp.ratings, regardless of how good or bad the scori.g is, wether its high or low is not the point!

the point is a ££££’s lid is way better than a chepaer lid, because of how its made the materials and design, im not an arai fan but you cant deny they are.a.great lid, more racers wear them than any other…

the quality control on a.shoei or.arai is.top notch all hand made, not as mass produced.as you thi.k they are, top knotch materials like fiberglass carbon fibre mixs will never better cheaper polycarbonate aterials, take inner sun visors, hjc have them, but theres no re-inforcement at the.front.where the sun visor re-tracts, this.could weaken the shell at that point plus the shell is thinner to.allow the sv to sit re tracted in, shoei’s new neotec doesnt…its has.its own.shelll, that is.top knotch.and another.reason better quality more expensive helmets.are better, more goes into them, so.sharp means nothing to.me.

i wear an AGV K3 saved my head once, so bought another, if i had the.money i’d.wear a shoei x-pirit 2.

btw i dont work for shoei lol

Thats actually incorrect.

I purchased the Caberg trip 2-3 years ago and it was to my surprise it holds 5* SHARP rating and I now plan on buying the new model the Caberg Konda as I think its such a great lid.

I think if I needed a full face lid I’d go for the Nexx Carbon.

Yea, but them Cabergs are noisy as feck, pardon…

The noisiness of a helmet doesn’t bother me too much. I ride with my visor up the majority of the time anyway and I think the big hole when the visor is up is the cause of the majority of that noise.

That was actually an assumption on my behalf.

But it’s still the only flip front with a 5* rating, and a few new ones have been released in that time including the Schuberth C3

BMW used to do nice system lid that was 5* as well. What a shame about the price :(.

Yeah, I had a Caberg Trip as my first helmet, couldn’t believe the difference when I got my Shoei

and they are made by schuberth…

as pill said, if the lid fits how it should it will do its job, the worse thing you can do is wear a lid that does not fit.
