hi, my bikes is still under warranty and been told it has to be serviced by yamaha otherwise it could void the warranty.so my bike is just coming to 6000 miles, its had its first service at 600. my question is can you trust dealers? i mean by changing parts around and making them faulty etc… so i come back and spend more money on them. thats my main worry.and also they say we cant let u in the workshop due to insurance etcc…
I’m not going to tell you what to do, you should be able to trust a dealer but . . .
My bro had a car that was within warrenty. It had a fault, so he took it in for repair. They fixed it, a few months later it went worng again, they fixed it, same again a few months later n so on. Bro was getting fed up. . . .
Anyway, out of warenty now and the faulr re-occurs . . he takes it in, they try n charge him £600+ to replace a part thay they should have done the first time it went wrong. He kicked up shits and refused to pay. So, some dealers will try! That was a Peugeot dealer.
Why not get a mate that knows his stuff to look it over before and after?
I guess the answer would be…how much is the warranty worth to you? If there’s a couple of months left on it and you fancy doing the servicing yourself or taking it to a non-approved mechanic, that may be a good idea…although there is always the thought that something might go wrong and you won’t be covered then!
I bought a Honda from new in January and for a lot of reasons that I won’t go in to here, I lost all faith in the dealer.
It got to the point where I turned up for a service, had a coversation with them and basically told them to poke it.
Through word of mouth on this site, I found a good local mechanic and had a couple of services done there whilst looking around for a better dealer. I’m having the next service done at a different Honda dealer who seems more reputable (I want another Honda stamp in the book as it’s a bigger service this time).
As far as my knowledge extends (hapy to satnd corrected on this, so don’t take it as gospel) you can have any mechanic service your bike and as long as they do the job right and use the correct branded parts, you shouldn’t have a warranty issue. Like I said, check that out.
One thing I will say is the dealer where you bought the bike will not appreciate you taking it elsewhere.
I’ve had to go direct to Honda on a couple of things and they have forced the dealer to play ball.
So, you pays your money, you takes your choice.
From my point of view, the only value the warranty had was if anything major went wrong (which it hasn’t in 7,500 mile) and resale value.
I used J&S to service my Yamaha R6 and found them great. They even let me into the workshop and didn’t say anything when i hung around and watched for about 45minutes.
good work shop and decent blokes all round. I know there are a few other folk on here that use them. I actually just had my 6000 service done i think it cost £225 from memory.
Sound a bit on the expensive side to me but there are much more knowledgeable people on such matters on here than me. It could be the case that there was an extra hour labour on yours. On the 12k service i think the valves get cleaned which would explain it.
Mate ring the yamaha service centre use the link above to get the details and ask what the average cost of the service would be ex pads etc. Will put your mind at rest or else you can ring the other place and vent some anger
Gave them a ring and it was about the same. £180 plus parts, that’s how much J&S charged. With the oil filter and sparks came total roughly the same. So anger over.
Note the use of the word “COULD”. The warranty terms will state that the bike has to be serviced “in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations”.
They are out and out NOT allowed to insist the servicing be done by a main dealer. They used to try this with cars in the 60s/70s and test cases deemed this to be anti-competition and manufacturers and dealer networks were sued.
Even aftermarket parts are not an automatic warranty void - it depends if the fitment of these parts is a contributory factor to the warranty claim e.g. you fit aftermarket pads and wear the discs out they’re quite entitled to tell you to poke it if you try and claim for discs.
A few weeks ago I had the 6000 service on my Fazer and it cost £205 at Infinity Clapham and they replaced one of my R&G bungs that I had bought elsewhere for free.
The bike felt and sounded a lot better after the service.
