Selling your pride and joy

Was wondering how people get on sell there beloved sports bikes, I have sold a number of cars over the years some high performance ones were you get numpty’s who just want to thrash them turn up, you know the kind of thing. But I never sold a bike before, always traded in at dealers. I have to sell my GSXR750K4 and need top dollar for it, so its gonna have to be a private sale.

I’m about to start advertising it probably in MCN and Auto trader. But I have a number of concerns before I do so. I’m not happy letting anyone ride it, How do I know they will come back, and how do I know they wont crash. Equally how can I expect anyone to pay £5000+ for a sports bike if the seller wont let them try it out. I was hopping to get away with taking them out on the pillion, while I demo the bike is good.

I would really like to know what you guys think about this and any advise that may help me.

Also if you know anyone who want one of these, drop me a line.

Many thanks Paul.

Let them look at it and the accompanying documentation.

The only way they get a test ride is if they leave the full amount of wonga - IN CASH with you.

Not an cheque, not a draft but cash…

If they bend it, they buy it. If they don’t come back then you’ve got the readies.

To be honest if someone is in the market for a GSXR750K4 then so long as it inspects well and they are

satisfied you ain’t dodgy (ie: selling it in a layby off a trailer) then they should know what to expect from

the bike and not need to test ride it. They can do that at a dealers if they have to.

Good luck…

I’ve been the buyer in this situation - and would never buy a bike without a test ride - just because the shop demo works doesn’t mean yours will

Had one test ride, turned out steering head was f00ked, might not have picked that up without test ride.

I have left full cash with seller before, or once, left my car keys (worth way more than bike) - I was the one crapping meself he would have legged it when I got back!

Always make sure you get what will satisfy you, should the bike not return - don’t budge, there will always be another buyer!

You can check stuff like Yokes and Heads and Bearings without having to ride but take your point.

But I only recommend cash being left if you must let them ride it. Even that nice Jag (or similar) they turn up in could be nicked

if not by them then it could be a ringer they bought without knowing.

I have never let anyone ride my bikes when sold. If you can lift it take it through the gears and show it all working they dont need to ride it.

Full cash value will work but will you check if the money is real, fruadsters will do anything to get your bike and its so easy to have it stripped and out for sale within hours… never to be seen again…or on the tunnel on the way to spain he he he…really isnt worth it…

One tip I thought was a good idea was to take a snap of the buyer on your phone just in case anything untoward did occur

Even with the full asking price in your hand, you need to be careful of any gatso’s etc he picks up.

Another thing (As far as I know) if they have a prang and are not insured, you are partly responsible because you gave them the keys. Remember it isnt just your bike but the person he crashes into.

agree dont let anyone ride your bike…unless you know them and they have the correct insurance…

What about taking the prospective buyer for a ride on the bike so he can see for himself?

I wouldn’t buy a bike without riding it first.

If I was selling, i would borrow a bike and accompany the test ride or ask a friend to accompany the prospective buyer.

I’ve never test ridden any of my bikes I’ve had (apart from demo bikes not actual bike purchased)… Alot of dealers are against it unless it’s a demo bike.

It’s one of those things you have to gamble.

Last bike I sold (R6) I took the buyer for a pillion ride and demonstrated the machine.

I will never again allow a buyer to test ride a bike I sell. This is because the first R6 I sold was taken up the road, then down and across it and onto the pavement.

The guy’s words were…“Wow, this is not like my 125” :doze: and yes he had passed his test.

Never again.

Thanks for the help guys. Not sure if the no money no test ride stance is working, But I agree its the only option. Had many phone calls and only 3 viewers. 2 Offered £4500, I’m prepared to take £4750 now, if you know anyone who wants it.

Thanks again.

Im in the same predicament.
Im selling my Ducati 748. First of all Im going to let the them go over the bike with a fine tooth comb and when theyve decide that they definately 100% want it and the last thing left stopping them from buying it is a test drive. I will follow them on my R1 (which happens to be alot faster)…

Get it on the pistonheads website, i have sold many-a-car that way, and it is a more enthusiast website, less kids (or so i hace evperienced).
