Salty roads?

Silly question, but since this is my first winter having a vehicle in Uk, do you guys know if there is salt now all over London roads? I was trying to avoid using my bike this week but it seems I might have to so I need to know …

err someone move this thread please in the right section? lol soz

yup roads will have salt present till next spring and rains - best thing is to hose bike down with COLD water before washing it with warm soapy water

There’s a fair bit of salt about, usually all major roads will get a gritting.

You’ll see it on the roads, either a clay red colour or plain white

salt everywhere mate. as baz said you will need to rinse the salt off your bike or it will be EATEN alive.

i thought the gritters left salt/sand combo. I rode the other day and the road looked clean but was a white haze. looked like the road was white with cold. didnt look like it had anything on it. is that the salt?

riding a honda i wouldnt worry too much… still worth ACF50-ing it though

Use ACF50 on any metal parts and wash regularly (and re-apply) to avoid corrosion. Be prepared for the smoke to come out after the bike gets warmed… it’s a natural thing but if you haven’t used ACF-50 it can freak ppl out…

Salt is usually a browny colour (well that’s what’s in the bag my landlady just bought) and you can see it a lot on the edges of roads. There’s quite a lot around at the moment but keeping the bike off the road for 1 week isn’t going to really avoid it as roads get re-salted and there will always be some left over on the roads… I think it takes a while to clear (or a big downpour)

edit: damn, beat by Pan by a couple of seconds! :stuck_out_tongue:

bugger… :frowning:

The salt is brown/red as it is rock salt not finest Malden sea salt or whatever. This contains a lot of sand and grit which gives it colour and increases traction on icy surfaces as well add making it incredibly cheap.

Damn so we can’t put it on our chips!

Celty, this my third winter and the bike is fine… if I looked after it, it would be in tip top condition.

Problem is I don’t have the luxury of a nice garden, garage or even a hose to wash her often. This is my concern.
I will have to find a way without having to carry buckets of water from the 4th floor down the parking lot and back…( you should see peoples faces when they meet me in the elevator with the bucket beside me :D)

Ghostbuster it!

funny enough I was looking at those an hour ago… lol

The washing doesn’t need to be that frequent… I maybe wash it every month…maybe

i’m currently riding an expensive bicycle to work, was wondering about using acf50 on it… anyone know of any reason why i shouldn’t?

nope

i snapped the chain on it this morning with my sheer power, also taking a shifter cable and rear mech out.

perhaps it won’t need acf50 after all.

I have not noticed it anywhere along my route yet this year…except on the ramp leading to underground car park in my office, where they seem to be using ordinary cooking salt - though, I’m pretty sure it’s not Maldon…

that sounds like a dirty chain or freehub to me
