Rodent conundrum...

Went for a quick blast down some Kentish lanes this evening. All of a sudden a MASSIVE furry creature ran across my path. It looked sort of cute and fluffy so I don’t think it was a rat…any ideas?

Possibly a coypu.

Never heard of a Coypu…do they exist in Kent?

Admittedly it did look a bit like that- have you got another shot, sort of side on?

Ahh okay thats what I know as a ‘water rat’- I’ve seen a few in France but I think they are quite rare here but who knows you could be right?

TBH the way it was all fluffy made it look to me more like a beaver pup? Probably not an otter as it had a short neck…

moved pretty fast too- imagine the fluffy bit of a feather duster at about 10mph.

Mink???

Wasp I think you could be onto something. It was certainly mink-like…or like a light coloured mink that had just had a blow-dry. It was all sort of ‘fluffed up’- quite wierd really…unless it was fear-induced maybe…my exhausts do seem to scatter the wildlife?

:w00t:

The Coypu is a large semi-aquatic rodent which is native to South America. It was introduced to the British Isles in 1929 when fur farms were set up in Sussex, Hampshire, Devon and Norfolk. The farms were sited mainly in lowland areas which are rich in rivers and streams. During the 1930’s coypus escaped from captivity and despite repeated attempts to control them, they have adapted well to their new British habitat.

ummm might have been a petrified Coypu…

I reckon it was about 25cm long and 15cm diameter…

It might have had webbed rear feet yes…:doze:

Yes - but did it have small eyes and ears set high on the head? :satisfied:

I wasn’t close enough to see it’s eyes and ears but yes they could have been…or maybe not:ermm:

I think the only way to settle this for sure is to go back next weekend armed with a Coypu and a Mink…and see which one it tries to mate with:satisfied:

Merkin ??

And then try and make a couple of quid from its coat !

Not likely to be Coypu in Kent/Surrey, it’s just the wrong habitat.

Mink’s possible but mainly those bu88ers are a bit further west into Sussex/Hamshire. Again, Kent is just the wrong habitat.

Weasel/Stoat would fit the scenery.

Now the new one to watch out for in Kent/Surrey is Wild Boar. Those are a bit big to hit and they are now moving well North of the Ashdown Forest, even been one siting not far South of Sevenoaks.

I had too look that up…but no unless someone lost it in the hedge on one sideof the road and was reeling it it from the other?:w00t:

You sound as if you know what you’re talking about…I was indeed just North of Sevenoaks…

possibly a baby stoat:blink:

Hitting a wild boar would but a nice bend in your forks. . . :ermm:

Rabbit???

Prob a stoat seen a few in lanes in biggin hill and battle area

…would make an interesting mascot.:ermm:

or dinner?..the boar that is…obviously only if it was already dead when hit otherwise that would be tasteless

**Hitting a wild boar would but a nice bend in your forks. . . **

But just think of the barbie you could have as consolation.

…so in summary-

Coypu 1 vote

Mink 1 vote

Pubic wig 1 vote

Weasel half a vote

Stout 1 and half votes

(The rabbit doesn’t count coz I think that was just taking the ****)

So the Stoat has it…

but the boar would have made a tastier meal:doze:

Any late entries welcome
