Help please, thinking of riding to my villa in spain just need help or advice really, where do i go from in the uk whats the eu roads like etc anything i should look out for?
I’ll be interested in replies to this as I’m taking the missus on my bike for a trip around Spain and Portugal next month! We are using the Portsmouth to Bilbao ferry which had a good discount via MCN when we booked… it’s 2 nights there and 1 night back.
From what I have read the drivers are all a bit nuts :w00t: but heh… I’ve ridden through Tooting so I reckon I’ve done my training!!!
i rode to spain a few months back, went down as far as La Manga.
the motoways through france are a breese, there is a site where you can check the prices before you go. once i got to the pyranees i came off the motorway and went down the local roads. great roads over the mountains and the views are worth the trip alone.
riding down through spain keeping off the motorways and running through the towns was a chance to mingle with the locals
i had a 10 day trip trouble free and no rozzers to be seen. i will be going again.
if there are any specific things you need just stick in on here or pm
Depends where in Spain you are going, but to save wear and tear on ya bike check out the ferry options from Portsmouth or if you going for a few weeks just ride down and take your time, make it a rideout see if anyone else is heading that way
didnt think about the ferry to spain cheers steve. if i rode its gonna be 1687miles. gonna do it on the R1 should be a laugh. does anyone know if ya can get a craddle that sits on the back seat of a sports bike to put ya bag on
The roads in the Spanish Pyrenees are the best I’ve ever ridden.
We went every year, for ten years.
Knew I shouldnt have started looking in this section. Im so getting an itch to go somewhere.
On topic ive been through Spain and its great. Country roads are good and theres some well awesome scenery. If you are on the Motorways tho beware of the coppers. Theyll do you for anything. I got frogmarched to the cashpoint to pay a fine for forgetting to turn my lights on (Old GSXR 750) oh and they dont speak your language at all so learn some Spanish or get a phrase book.
Foods good too so long as you dont go to MacDonalds
Been to france and spain in the last two years ,last one was six days and we covered 2000 miles ,if you are going to your villa and want cheep hotel try the f1 hotels there are quite a few this side of spain .As we planed our route around them .As for the roads if you are not in a rush keep of m ways cos all a roads are great ,just like going on a long bcr most of the time, only saw two speed cameras and one old bill witch we over took at a speed , had no bother at all .you lucky sod have a nice time
just for got try out ventura sports racks ,should sort you out
take a garmin sat nav, plan your route in stages, set sat nav to avoid toll roads, they are expensive anyway, a roads just as good,f1 hotels in france not bad
I did Spain last year and rode down, round through Portugal and back up. The roads were fantastic in Spain and almost immediately noticeably far poorer in Portugal.
We took the ferry to Bilbao and I won’t do it again. It was full of hen and stag parties, which are great if you’re included, but a complete nuisance if your excluded! They sell this ferry as a round trip and many on board were simply using it as a cheap boozy weekend away.
BTW: The Bay of Biscay is one rough bit of sea – take some tablets or at the very least lie horizontal.
If I did it again I’d take the shortest ferry route to France and ride.
Went to La Molina in Spain in July went via Calais travelled through the night down into the Pyrensees Mountains fantastic break , stayed at La Rochelle on the way back, loads of toll roads on the way but these can be avoided.
Its a long old ride, personally I would take the ferry to Bilbao. Last time I looked it was about £170 one-way for bike and one rider in May?June (forget exact date). Maybe ferry there and ride all the way back? Or vice - versa.
I found roads and drivers in Spain pretty good.
Hey heres me pics:
Have fun.
Are you certain you were in Spain? Driving standards are terrible here in my experience…Probably not helped by the fairly recent introduction of roundabouts and the law saying " stay on the outside lane of the roundabout at all times unless overtaking"…Older drivers have never had to take any sort of test and it really does show:)
I’m actually running a tour down there in July next year - we’re taking the ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao after the Goodwood Festival of Speed on Saturday, arriving Bilbao on Monday morning, crossing northern Spain, through Andorra, Carcassonne, two days in Bordeaux/Dordogne and then to Le Mans for the Classic weekend. Back Cherbourg to Portsmouth on the Monday night.
Had to do quite a bit of research as a result, so let me know if i can help with route ideas, hotels, stuff like that.
yes mate … Pyrenees are very tempting
