Replacement rear shock for Kawasaki ZX7R?

Hi Folks, - I recently got hold of a Kawa ZX7R (pics below) and am looking to replace the rear shock with a new one. The bike has done 20k and on a recent ride I found myself bouncing around like zebedee off of the magic roundabout! Very difficult to hold a line under these conditions! I’m assuming the shock is completely shagged by now and it is not a simple adjustment issue.I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a relatively inexpensive but effective rear shock.

Also I have never replaced a shock before - I’m going to get an Abba pro stand so that I can hang the bike off the swing arm pivot rather than the swingarm itself - allowing me isolate the swingarm and remove the shock - is this just a simple bolt out bolt in job or should I see a mechanic?

Many thanks in advance folks - regards Sid t

Go for a hagon shock. Simple enough to fit as well. I’ve changed shocks on an FJ1200, VFR750 (three times). Should cost around £260 or so delivered. With an ABBA stand it should be a straight forward bolts out and bolts in job. Just remember to use lots of WD40 on the lower bolts before trying to get them off. Grease the bolts up and check the bearings while you are at it.

Cheers Makman!

indeed…

shock and linkage bolts can be hard work to get off…

the original can be rebuilt by someone like Kais or K-tec , to your spec etc and they do a superb job

Cheers James mate, I’ll check em out

a ZX12r shock fits as well!

Is it worth putting one in?

zx12r shock - More adjustable than standard shock -

Peejay, is there an allteration needed re dog legs? Check on redmonkey 7r site, there are more than one shock that will fit (some Gixxer shocks fit too), but may need minor amendments, like dog leg lengths.

I could have done my shock replacement myself - but couldn’t get bottom bolt out - so went to a mechanic, who assisted me to do it. This was on my 7r btw, I stuck a Maxton shock on it - lovely, but not cheap.

You don’t necessarily need an Abba stand, can do with just paddock stand, it lifts swingarm, and wheel drops when you remove shock, just need to support wheel in place whilst removing bolts. Prob best to get a mate to help, makes it that bit easier.
