Registrations...

So, I did it - I bought a new Honda S-Wing 125 from Doble today. 0% finance, test drove one and loved it, etc. This post isn’t about whether it’s a good bike or not ;-), but about registrations…

I have a choice. I can either:

  • Pick the bike up on Monday, registered on an 11 plate, or
  • Pick the bike up on the first of September, registered on a 61 plate

Now, we’re off to Mauritius on the 22nd of August, and get back at 6am on the 1st of September. So really, if I buy the bike on Monday, I’ll only get to ride it for a week anyway. Registering on the 1st of September is the dealer’s idea - the salesman says that it will hold its residual value better being registered on a newer plate. Seems to make sense to me - certainly works that way with cars. Does it really work like that with bikes? Do people care? And in any case, I don’t plan to sell this for a good long while (even if I buy a new bike for fun, this is going to be the practical bike for riding to customers for work!).

So my heart wants to just pick it up on Monday and get some fun out of it before I go on holiday, but my head is saying that it’s only one week and I may as well wait.

What do I do??!?!

if its going to be a keeper, who cares what the plate says, Id get it and ride for a week

Logic says wait until you return from holiday.

(But when did logic ever come in to buying a bike?)

I waited a week myself and it did help with the resale!

but the op has already quoted its a keeper, ie run it into the ground, therefore get it and have fun for a week, before being stuck on holiday with the wife:laugh:

sigh

Head ruling heart, after the posts here (and many more on the maxi-muppets forum), I’ve decided to wait until the 1st.

It won’t be too bad - our flight Johannesburg->London lands at 6:30am at London Heathrow, and I’ll get a lift straight from there to Doble, pick up the bike, and ride it home…something to look forward to!

And can you imagine if you got home and found it had been nicked?

Also… I know how many times I’ve said, “Right, I’m definitely keeping this for a while, I’ll look after it and ride it/drive it till it dies”… and then bought a brand new bike 2 years later!!

Hah, yes but I’ve got that in hand - I plan to buy a new bike to ride as a second bike to have fun with, and the scooter stays! I know what you mean - there’s always a risk that I’ll want to I don’t know move to a full silverwing or something. But I think the main reason for this scoot (good mpg, carrying capacity, etc) won’t be beaten by a bigger scooter, so hopefully I’m safe!

Only two days left till I pick up the new bike!
