registration plate - got me in trouble!

so…Just left work ON Friday evening and about 100meters down the road i got pulled by a copper - he had a trainee with him and i knew straight away i was going to be a text book training course for her! argh!!

so the copper dun me for my small reg plate and said that i would get a court summons for it - can you believe it i have to go to the mag’s court once the letter comes through!

they also said i didnt have an MOT and gave me a producer for it, anyway i woke up fist thing on saturday and got my MOT done which should help me in court to make out it was a genuine mistake.

so all in all i have 3 charges - 1) No MOT, 2) failing to display a correct reg plate and 3) failing to display roadtax disk

can you believe it, whats the worst that can happen to me…also can they send me to court for my number plate? every othertime i have been stopped for my plate they have just given me a little talking to?

Well, what can I say… really sorry for you mate.
I think you may qualify for some free legal help if you join Arnie’s club.

You really should have got a non endorsable fpn for the plate as they have’nt reported you for no MOT.I would be surprised if you get summonsed for one non endorsable offence, however if you end up getting reported for no MOT and not displaying RFL something may come through the post. You’ll have to wait and see:)

what was the talk about?? Did they ask you to change the size of the number plate?

EM

Without trying make you feel worse this is why if riders have a small number plate, black visor or loud exhaust then you really need to make sure your Tax, MOT and Insurance are all up to date.

It just makes the Police more likely to do you for everything they can once they stop you if it’s not up to date.

With a small plate if everything else was OK, then you may have just got a ticking off, or told to change it, or at worst a fixed fine.

I do ride with a black visor (but I always carry a clear one with me), but I’ve given up on the small number plate. I know the big one looks pants but if I get stopped for speeding (as I have been) then the chance of talking my way out of it improves greatly if everything else is legal.

Arnie will give you a few pointers…

The highway code explains the penalties for all road offences at the back. They are also here -

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_069870

No MOT is a fine up to £1000 but if you got an MOT straight away and plead an innocent mistake you will not get fined anywhere near that much.

The tax rules are here -

An untaxed vehicle on the road can also get you a £1000 fine.

totaly agree so errr yeah +1

hey em, basically the talking to would be a little slap on the wrist, saying you better change your plate to a legal size bla bla bla

fairplay, i know what you mean and have ordered a legal plate :frowning:
regarding the MOT thing, they ha already told me i would have to go to court when they had only know about the smal plate. the MOT thing was only checked at the end, point is they had already told me that having a small plate would mean an appearance in court.

Out of interest, how small / what shape is the plate ?

i think its 2x7 - its pretty small, mounted in the normal place

multiple offences = a process… which = court… Do you have tax? Or were you just failing to display it? If the gave you a HO/RT1 for the MOT & you comply with it then I think it unlikely that this element will form part of the court summons.

I assume you’re insured??

I’ve got court case for first time they pulled me and done me for number plate. Still waiting for it tho…

Less things illegal are better but if they want you to fine they will do it, unless you were really good boy

In my case: speeding, loud pipe, dogdy number plate, black visor, no tax disc diplasyed (didn’t know about this one i have to do it :P) makes police very unfriendly

if you do only one thing at a time you will be ok, multiple things mean troubles  on the other hand some poeple dont care and even after getting ticket for something do it again ( won’t say names here  )

good luck with curt etc and police

btw when do you have to do MOT ? do I need one ?

as mentioned earlier - officer had already said i will need to go court prior to checking my MOT and PRIOR to noticing their was no tax.

i do have tax, just failed to display it…also i do have insurance…and i NOW have MOT  MOT really was a genuine mistake, totally forgot.

I was led to believe that not displaying a tax disc wasn’t an endorsable offence…the most they can give you for that is a producer!

Somebody please correct me if i’m wrong

2x7???

My 7.5 x 5 got me an instant fine Saturday :angry:if you think our plod are petty, go and ride around N Wales.

to be fair i would be far happier with an instant fine rtaher then have to go court for it.

Bad one m8.

But hate to say it, if your plate was so small you got stopped a few times, would you not have been better to change it after the first stop?

As mentioned by others, its better to be fully legal so if you do get stopped for summin minor like the plate, zorst or visor then chances are you’ll only get ya wrist slapped.

Forgetting about your MOT is easily done as unlike road tax you don’t get a reminder about it. However if your vehicle isn’t MOT’d and you’re in an accident your insurance will be void. I have a Carbon Can Company Zorst that had the baffler taken out…part of the reason was cos I wanted a nice sounding bike, but my main reason was because I wanted drivers to hear me because lets face it…they never look to see whats going on around them. I ride past Traffic Cops all the time cos of where I work and they all say the same thing, “It ain’t as loud as a Harley”. Although they don’t monitor noise levels from a zorst, its purely down to the individual officer.

Dark visors aren’t a major issue either unless you’re already being pulled for no insurance, no driving licence…or in your case, the plate is to small. To be honest, most Officers won’t bother if the plate is slightly smaller than standard but yours sounds teeny so I can see why you were pulled.

Not displaying your tax is not a problem if you’re carrying it and tell them you don’t like it being on the bike in case it gets stolen. I was advised by a traffic cop to put a copy in the holder and keep the original in my wallet in case I get stopped cos I had it stolen when I bought the bike and had to get a duplicate. £7 ain’t a huge amount but if you have to replace your tax every month you’d have paid for a full disk before long.

Good luck with it all though m8. It ain’t fair when you think of all the people driving in un-roadworthy cars, no insurance and not in accordance with their licence for years.

You’re right, it’s generally handled by way of a non-endorsable ticket.
