riding down park lane, loads of traffic, wasnt filtering as it was moving at an OK pace, but then in my lane I can see vehicles stopped and coming up fast, but I braked in time, only to feel a big nudge from behind, and a crash as my numberplate smashed…Didnt fall over, was all at low speed, so not much. Exchanged details with the guy that did it, but have a couple of questions:
how much is his fault - I would hazard at 100%, but he might argue that I filtered in front of him (way before the accident if at all - I cant really remember, just I do know that i wasnt leading up to the accident.) - I said to him, well you can get insurance involved, but its just a numberplate, 30 quid tops, you can send me a cheque if you want. He seemed like a decent bloke, but I reckon he will at least check out with his insurance.
Where can I get a number plate swiftish? And/or what is the legality of riding with a broken number plate/piece of card with my number on, etc?
Bike seemed fine on the ride home after that, and back wheel isnt moving when I pull it laterally, so anything else to check?

In theory he is at fault but if he does argue what you have put forward then who knows what the insurance will say. From a legal standpoint you have a duty to inform your insurers of ALL accidents you are involved, whether you feel you were at fault or not. If you don’t, and he does, then any future claim for say another accident could be voided as you failed to tell them. As the insurance database shows all notifications, from whoever tells them, you could well be found out.
Bottom line; It’s illegal. But what would actually be done about it in the real world is debatable.
Big up to the Westie! He sorted me big time last night, got a plate made up and road to work this morning fully legal…
Thanks for the advice Laidback/JB, will phone the guy this evening, although he didnt actually get my numberplate so he hasnt got all my details, but will see if he reported it to his insurance, etc. Will let you know the outcome.
