Ratting out a GS500....

So I got this bloody ugly GS500 bike, it is a workhorse, has 20k miles and I expect to have the bike until it has 120k on the clock, minimum.

So I figure I might as well spend a bit of time and effort and maybe even some cash, making it a bike I can live with, because at the moment I just hate the way it looks.

This is how it looks now.

Though it is not nearly that clean anymore.

First things first, a can of matt black paint from Halfords, to get rid of that yellow colour.

What next though, I am just not sure how to proceed. I would like it to look a little more streetfighter, a little more rat bike, but I am not sure how to go about getting there.

new mirrors, new head light, new can

rat it? leave it on the bottom of a lake untill winter goes then voila!

Rat bike = bitsa i.e chucked together and looks like crap

I thought you had already “customised” it:w00t:

Get some bits off ebay that you like the look of and start bolting em on.

I don’t really like the generic street fighter look these days. It was good originally years ago, but when shops starting selling streetfighter headlights etc I think it lost its originality.
Nice to try and get something original.

That said I quite like the look of the little GS. It was my first “proper” bike many years ago. That thing was bullet proof

awww the the 1st big bike i rode/dropped what a shame eh! :stuck_out_tongue:

I like that idea Davey, just buy some random bits and start bolting them on. I will start checking Ebay see what is floating about and see what random stuff turns up, maybe I can make it a little more personal.

Still, first things first, going to Halfords today to get some matt black :stuck_out_tongue:

i’d personally go the minimal route. more like take bits off than put more crap on. loose the top box, cut the numberplate bracket down get some small mirrors that still work, small 2 finger levers, maybe some smaller indicators and then put some crash bungs on it. put the time and effort in to making sure the engine works as well as it could etc.

then enjoy the fact you’ve got a bike no one wants to nick, can leave anywhere, doesn’t matter too much if you put it down the road and can take it on the track knowing if you do lob it one it isn’t your pride and joy. then use it to improve your riding skill.

that’s what i’d do anyway.

Def take the top box off.

why would you wanna rat it!?

i think it looks fine as it is, maybe change the pipe, the mirrors…

at the end of the day its a GS500 commuter bike, if you wanna tart a bike up fighter style, sell it and buy a bandit6.

take off that box, paint it black, then throw it down the road.
