Rant - high vis vests

How the heck can the bike shops justify selling these things for 30 - 40 quid. Builders ones are a couple of quid…

How about some getting some London Bikers printed ones… I’m sure it would be a hell of a lot less than the branded ones and timning is just right for the winter…

ebay

I’ve got the Revit one. It’s an elasticated fit so it doesn’t blow about, with a nice snug zip and the front. Just right.

So yeah, good idea. As long as the bibs are to this spec, cos the Bandit’s enough to handle at high speed without any more buffeting!

I have a ‘builders vest’ from work and it’s a right pain in the arse to use on the bike - the velcro sticks itself to my rucksack, jacket storm flap (and just about anything except the opposing bit of velcro). It also tends to come undone and flap about like a superman cape at speed.

I’ve managed to get a ‘managers builders vest’ with a zipped front and that’s a lot better - still flaps about a bit in the wind because there’s no elasticated bits to keep it snug but I can live with that. It also has a convenient pocket on the front for popping my keys in while I’m locking the bike up.

Is this the type of thing…

Very similar, yes.

Defo get the zipped one if you’re going to use them, saves ruining your jacket and they stay put on the motorway!

+1 to that

Also dont forget it has to be huge to go over your jacket and allow you to sit in comfort especially if it has armour, but of course everyone knows that:ermm: (Mine is a little snug!)

Working for a concrete frame contractor, that’s not a problem, I need the same size to go over mynarmoured bike jacket as most of our guys need to go over a t-shirt, the site gear we get tends to start from size XL.

On a slightly related note, I was after a reflective/flourescent cover for my rucksack for cycling - found one in Decathlon for a tenner yesterday, similar ones I’d seen in the bike shop were 2 or 3 times as much! Check the size though, it’s perfect for my small cycling rucksack but might be a bit snug on anything bigger.

They don’t last long. The elastic that holds them over the rucksack fails. Ok for cycling but they dont hold up to the speeds of a motorcycle :frowning:

I managed 40mph cycling home from wimbledon on sunday and it seems fine :stuck_out_tongue:

I think the company SimoninEssex gave a link to was the one I ordered a bunch of branded vests from a few years back. Quality was O.K. but the printing could have been better.

I’d get a couple of samples done to check both the vest and print quality first.

Other than that, what a good idea.

i bought an excellent zipped/adjustable rksports hi-vis jacket from the last motorcycle show for about £5

they are totally different due to the pearl content in the flourescent, builders 1 are for visibility on a site etc but bike 1 are more reflective for light and distance.

i agree still a bit over priced to but i presume thats down to cost of material i reckon.

a shop called jays in surrey quays se16 sell rucksacks made of this material, good quality etc for just under £20
