when I used to go down gatwick as a courier I would eithier hit the A2 straight to M25 or A23 using the clapham road then kings Avenue to avoid the mess of Brixton
Thanks SuperOily
I think A2 will be abit out of my way- was thinking A23 as well but not sure what the best route to get there is

can i borrow yours?
Actually this is a 4000fts high no flight zone for those so that might be a long way down
Mind the step :w00t:
Train would be quickest. Gatwick Express from Victoria.
If you insist on roads, A23, M23.
Pick up the A23 near Borough Market (Elephant and Castle) and M23 just outside of Croydon. I think the turn-off for Gatwick is junction 9.
Seriously though - get the train.
not taking the train as i am picking someone up.
have done it a couple of time up to now but not from central
Depending on the time of day you intend doing this…you could have set yourself up for the journey from hell…Even as a “never go on public transport, unless hell freezes over” person - I would urge you and the person you intend picking up to get a train from Victoria - I might be wrong but I don’t think that the Gatwick Express even stops anywhere on route…
If I was doing the journey I would go A2 out to the M25 and then around to the M23…even if I was coming from the Strand. The A23 heading south out of London is a complete nightmare…if you insist on that route make sure you take emergency rations and a sleeping bag:)
got a friend from work that takes the a3 to go home so might ride with him
I agree with Johnse1 – A23 can be an absolute nightmare. A3 sounds better, perhaps to M25 then round to M23?
Or A217 tends to be better than A23 (or just take the train, which is much quicker)
A3 is a bit of a long way round and would mprobably take A2 if you really wanted to avoid A23
I find the A23 bad…but not that bad as its direct… but then I guess I am used to **** traffic.
I used to go over waterloo bridge or westminster bridge then onto Kennington Road then onto A3 (Kennington Park road) then at clapham north station turn left onto bedford road which becomes kings avenue then sternhold avenue GO OVER a23 ONTO Leigham Court road. Follow that all the way to the end when you reach the common and turn right. Take that to the end and you A23 streatham High road and turn left …presto you have now avoided most of the brixton and a lot of streatham …it was the route for couriers and is secret so if you tell anyone I will have to kill you…doh !
If you go out on A3 then come off at Tolworth Bowl onto A240 and after 2-3 miles this joins the A217 and cuts down to the M25 at Reigate (J8).
Much better than A3 all the way out to M25.
trafalgar square / left into and down northumberland avenue / right onto the embankment / left onto westminster bridge and over / round the roundabout into westminster bridge road (A23) / floow A23 out through thornton heath and croydon …and beyond / watch out for the planes …
well just got back an hour ago.
in the end took the A3 down to M25… thanks to Richard (from work) for showing the way
traffic wasnt too bad but def worse than the commute that I am used to
the ride back @21:00 was great - empty M25
Jump on the back on my gixer!

A bit late, but this is the best route, except I would turn right at the end of Sternhold onto the A23, once you are past the Police station in Streatham then take a right onto the A217, through Mitcham, Rose Hill, Mad Mile, Tadworth all the way to M25 at the top of Reigate Hill. 45 mins from Central London
Gatwick Express…
Having struggled with the A23 on a number of occasions by bike, I’m a firm believer in the A20 (the next time you or anyone else might have to do this). The A23 has to be avoided at all costs. It seems nonsense to think that heading East is preferable, but I’ve found that to be the case. The A20 cuts out the silly 40’s and 50’s along the A2, has a cracking 3 lane mental bit to it just before the M25 and gets you 1 junction further along said orbital road. There was roadworks at those junctions last I was there and there probably still is.
Madness eh?
