Quick, sporty(ish) reliable 125???

Even though I have offered to pay for his restricted licence and buy a lovely baby ninja 250 for him… My son (nearly 17) has decided to go for a 125 and save the rest of the money for a car… (insurance on a car is 4.5 k) so never going to happen…:Whistling:

Any one know of any quick fully fared 4 stroke 125s out there? Want something reliable, hence no 2 strokes… Any ideas??

You’ve not got a lot to choose from, Yamaha YZF R125, Hyosung GT125R, Derbi GPR125, thats about all I know of, none are exactly what i’d call ‘quick’.

Yeah that’s what I come up with plus a Spanish bike with the Yamaha engine in, which is slightly quicker…

Aprilla 2 stroke, will just cause me endless headaches! Cheers… I’ll check out that Derbi, nice one…

That’s a good looking bike that Derbi

My vote is for the YZF.

Lovely bikes. 125s will never be quick but those are really as quick as they come. Sound a little weird though…

The R125 yamaha is the best choice . Got a buddy who has been thrashing and crashing one as a commuter bike for 5 years now . It still going despite his best efforts .

the r125 wins points for looking fast too.

You won’t get quick and sporty with reliable in a 125 Frank …

125’s dressed as sheep also get canned on the insurance costs, have a look a look at the mutton :satisfied:

Derbi is Aprilia!! Get the two stroke RS125, less moving parts and cheap engine rebuild costs… Plus parts are two a penny on eBay!

the r125 is pretty, i of course vote the varadero, comfy and reliable, i have got 80mph from it, it will easily do 75

What he said, the xl125 Varadero was my first bike, I was the wrong side of 15st and it used haul my fat arse up Blackheath hill at a decent speed and would manage 70mph all day long. They are a 4 stoke in a V twin config, so should be almost indestructible…well almost. And forgot to add cheap/reasonable to insure…

I have just go an Aprilia rs4 125 for my son who turned 18 last week. It’s 4 stroke I think and 15bhp. His choice. He managed to get insurance for £600 (third party only). But the Yamaha seems to get the best reviews.

From your description he’s really not that into bikes as such & just wants something fairly stylish to get him mobile whilst he waits for his car licence,

Therefore, much as I think strokers are far more fun, I’d say look for a late model CBR125. The Aprilia & Yamaha are better bikes, but why fork out so much more cash when he’d be happy with what the Honda offers & you can then put the money saved towards his first car. If he looks after it, the depreciation over say a year will be pretty negligible too.

My RS125 used to do 120 easily - you will probably find you will sell the RS for the same price as you buy it when he wants a car as well…if not more (if its looked after!)

120kmh?

DT125 should be fast and realiable and fairly sporty.

i had 120mph out of my rs125 so i know they are quick i was a portly lad bout 15st so to get to that speed was incredible

I might point out the RS125 was 25 or 33 BHP which would be out of the range of the CBT which limits you to 125cc AND 14.8 BHP.

As for sporty several 125 push out 14.8 but do make the motor work due to the weight. Pretty much any Japanese 125 should be reasonably reliable.

Why are people talking about the RS125 when the title says reliable?

KTM has a Duke 125 which is too new to know how reliable it is but there have been no complaints so far. Not sporty but it is very nice to look at.

i see a few of them duke 125s and i gotta say i wish they were about when i was on l plates

i nearly went for the duke, but prefer a fared bike and read the duke is quite a small bike too
