Quick action throttle?

The throttle on the Gix is too long a turn and full throttle requires you to move your grip round or have a seriously bent wrist. Just been reading on an american site about fitting an R1 throttle to a Gix as it has a much shorter action. Apparently its a very easy change. Anyone done this? If not then can anyone recommend me a throttle kit.

I believe you’ll need to replace the switch-gear as well if you want to do this, and it means your throttle will become more responsive, i.e. harder to be smooth in the wet and whilst filtering, etc. Great for the track tho, unless it’s wet. I think there was a discussion about this recently as well…

I can see that Jay but i dont do a whole lot of rain riding (its wet innit?) and to go WOT i need to move my grip around whilst holding it pinned which must be wrong. Can you buy an adjustable throttle?

I put one of them 1/5 turn plastic throttle inserts on my Gixxer-6 for the same reason. Cheap solution, works well and is still there 8 month later…

I can change gear very quickly, I don’t use the clutch on the upchange. As my other half will testify, I change quick and smooth. You should be able to change smoothly whatever revs you are running at, you certainly don’t need a quick action throttle for it.

As for getting it off the line, you probably need more practice. Ifthe bikes are equal, they should get of the line equally.

The only reason I put the insert in is because I had the same problem as Year One in that I found I couldn’t turn the throttle all the way to the stop without things feeling strange.

Fast pull away is all about riding the clutch a bit and when you get it just right your front wheel will just be skimming the tarmac in 1st all the way up till the red (although my bike is -1 on the front so I think that is the reason… ). Just ride and you will constantly learn, probably best to ride with people better than you, I also found my daily commute taught me loads… take it slow… Good luck !

Drei, it’s called clutchless upshifting, only works safely when going up the gears. The fundamentals of it are to be on an accelerating throttle, then very quickly back the throttle off just a smidge, to unload the engine from the gearbox, then at the same time, snick the gear lever up a gear. When you get it right, you’ll be able to do it so it’s really smooth and the bike doesn’t unsettle (i.e. rock forward and back again).

This is how it’s done on the track, and how I ride on the road to keep things smooth. You can still do it going down the gears, but that’s really not good for your gearbox, just do it up the gears. The idea is to unload the gearbox so the new cogs can mesh together. They can’t do this if the gearbox is under power.

I’ve also been looking for a used R1 throttle tube for my Gix - I’m just not certain which models will fit the K5/6, but I believe it is off any year between 02-06.

An alternative is the throtte inserts - a small plastic ring that requires a bit of moddifying to the throttle cable. Hairy R’s do one for about £25 (which is a lot when you see what a simple piece of plastic it is). I had one on my TLR and it was a great mod. It will take about an hour to fit (the first time). For normal/town riding you won’t really notice such a big difference and it doesn’t make the bike overly lively. Where it really makes a difference is when you are riding along and want to accelerate suddenly to overtake/chase after a mate/wheelie/etc - your bike will feel like it has an extra 10bhp.
