Question from newbie.

Hi,Basically, I’m new to streetfighters but I really like the look of them. I am thinking of turning a Kawasaki ZXR6 into a streetfighter. I am just wondering what I would have to do?

Is it a case of just taking the fairings off, changing the headlights and putting on a straight handlebar?

Bearing in mind I dont really want to modify it with regards to mechanics and stuff, I just really like the look. Maybe I will take it forward at a later date.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Jai.

Hey there and welcome  The ZX6 is a nice bike :DI imagine it will involve taking off the clipons and putting risers on the top yolk to incorporate a renthal bar… If you dont get a response, try PMing El Diablo De Viese

fighters are more just about building the bike to suit your own tastes while making it original at the same time…risers, renthal bars, headlight, fairing off, maybe modify the tail, polish things, paint things…when you see something you want changed just go for it…just keep all your original bits and you can always put it back together

Hi,

Thanks for the response. So would it be necessary to change the forks also?

And does anyone have any sites they would recommend to buy parts, etc?

Thanks.

depends what you want mate, are you after usd forks? (like the ones in my signature) as i said you dont HAVE to do anything, its all about doing what you want and making the bike your own…most things you can find by googling. grab a streetfighters magazine, always good inspiration and plenty of places selling parts advertise in there aswell  heres an example of a zx6r fighter, standard forks, belly pan, yoshi exhaust, fighter style headlights…good thing about the zx6r is that the subframe isnt too bulky so you could easily use the plastics of a newer bike to get a sharper tail without having to weld on a whole new subframe, things like that will really improve the look

That’s exactly how I want it. Nice bike bro! So is it possible to put a rear tail from a newer model onto a older model?Where would you advise to get parts from?

At the moment I think I would just start with taking the fairings of. I really like the belly pan. I would change the handlebars and get some lights. I really like those small fairings for the lights.

With regards to the handlebars…I understand that it alters the bikers position making him more upright. How does that effect things like tryiing to get your knees down;).

Hello,

Why don’t you look around at other bikes and see what people have done, as Mr Mo said you kind of taylor it to your vision.

The rider position does change, adopting more of an agressive stance, getting your knee down won’t be a problem - you just need to get familiar with it.

Fightering a bike is an expensive business, I’m sure your build will reflect that. You should be able to adapt your subframe to accommodate a newer rear unit without too much trouble.

If you need any advice people in here are usually pretty helpful apart from some **** taking bastards.

Thanks for the feedback, very much appreciated.

With regards to the subframe…erm which part is that? Would that need to be welded and what sort of price am I looking at and where can i get this done.

I have been looking at some pics of some streetfighters…there are some serious machines out there…lots of inspiration.

subframe circled. its the section of the frame bolted or welded on that you sit on basically  this is a subframe mod, i put an 05 cbr1000RR subframe on my bandit, this involved grinding off original subframe and welding on tabs to bolt the new subframe on. usually would look to pay around 150-200 for that sort of work. but your subframe is decent as it is so i doubt you’d need to change it unless you have something specific in mind. you may find a newer unit slides on without any modification to the subframe or at most minor changes like grinding off a few brackets or tabs, easily done.

a good idea is to have a look round a breakers yard and see what units they have available. if you see one you like grab it and try it out, if it dosnt work just sell it on or go exchange it for a dif one. when you get round to doing bits just pm 1 of us or put a post up and im sure someone online can give you advise pretty quick…where abouts are you from?

OK thanks for that. I’ll start looking around and keep you informed before i make any silly decisions.. I am situated in South London, Stockwell.

What about respraying…I was think of doing it myself, since there’s not much fairing…would you need special paint for the wheel?

Also You might want to have a go at making your own tail unit, to be honest I’m a bit fed up with all the standards ones chopped and hacked to fit, yeah they look good when mixed up but its not 100% original. ABS plastic is cheap and and you can heat it up and bend it. Or a light 1mm ali would shape easily all you’d need to do is tac it and get it welded somewhere else if you dont have the skills. a lot more personal and completely original. Its definitely the way to go.

Saying that if your at the bottom of the SF ladder stick to what you can do right now and what your budget will allow - would be my advice. and learn as you go.

IMO SF’s are all about personally developed bikes - made in garages and sheds.

agreed

spraying is easy enough just prepare it properly and give it a good few coats of clear laquer when your done and it’ll be fine :)… there are special wheel paints, or can be sprayed and laquered like the rest of the bike…i would reccomend using a more durable paint like hammerite or and engine/exhaust paint though if you’re doing it yourself as they are alot harder wearing

jump on youtube if you get stuck on things like that, lot of useful instructional vids on there

I wouldn’t reccommend painting your wheels, they do tend to chip a lot easier. Powdercoating is pretty cheap and well worth it.

But the Loke Mo said its all in the prep - bodywork is easily done.

on that note i may start offering up a powder coating and polishing service soon, just for small items at 1st, just depends what size oven i go for

Thanks for the help guys…very much appreciated. Now I got my eye on a gixxer.

What exactly is powder coating Mr Mo…and how much does it cost?

Spot the newbie:Whistling:

its used intead of painting certain bits, much harder and more durable finnish hence why you might hear of alot of people doing frames and wheels with it. basically the item is coated in a power out of a spray gun similar to a paint spray gun. then it is put in an oven to ‘cure’. great finnish and strong as lordy!, weather proof, rust proof. great stuff…pricing varies depending on weather you prepare it or you want it shot blasted (cleaned) 1st etc, i was quoted £85 to do my bandit frame

OK I see… I like when the engine is all black. How much would that cost? Also is it possible to fix cracks in fairings?

Just get yourself some hammerite smooth and paint it yourself, just make sure you prep properly, a good finish is all in the prep work.

Fairing can be repaired with a fibre glass kit or some plastic glue. Obviously depending on the crack/break.

good call, my frame and engine were done with hammerite and came out amazing! pics in my project thread.
