Previous Day-Trip in France, went a bit Pete Tong!

This was from a couple of years ago when a friend (Rod) and I went to Croix en Ternois for the day. Both of us were on Gixxer 750’s. It was a last minute decision in the summer, so an easy call to make. We got over on a ferry, arsed around, then made our way to Croix where I proceeded to lose my oil filler cap at 160mph or so. Rod could see the smoke the hot oil caused coming out the back of the bike, but had no idea how to get me to stop with us going at these speeds. He over-took, made some hand signals which I took to mean go faster, so opened it up more. I looked in the mirror and saw Rod dissapeering, so thought something was up. I slowed RIGHT down, and saw smoke in my mirrors. I couldn’t be sure it was me, but when Rod came flying by and was shouting to stop, we pulled over, where I saw the bike was on fire!!!

The oil had been chucked out the filler hole and onto my boots and rear tyre, which instantly caught fire. We put the fire out and then had the presence of mind to get the video camera out to film the cool-down period. This could have been disastrious! A burn-out on my BRAND-NEW £250 Metzeler Racetec tyres was the only way to get the oil off, and even then there was no way I could ride hard in the corners as it would just slide around.

We got to the race-track we were heading to and I had to sit it out whilst Rod got out on track with a bunch of guys on a road-trip from Belgium (I think). They gave me some acetone to clean the rest of my tyre. Bummer, but it made for an interesting weekend

You can hear in the video below after the intro on the ferry that I was a bit pissed off at a certain aftermarket part manufacturer for supply a useless item. In their defence the oil plug did require a rubber seal, but I didn’t know that and the item had no such instructions with it

Oh man, riding in France is such a joy, I miss it!
