Potential chain problem

After seeing Whilstlers broken chain post i got thinking.

When oiling my chain I was spining the back wheel to move the chain around, if i give it a big shove it will not keep running and slowly run out of momentum as would happen with a bicycle but comes to an abrupt halt. This is my first chain driven bike and am wondering if this means the chain is knackered… :w00t:
Any suggestions?

Oh yea, and it was in neutral :stuck_out_tongue:

was it in neut.

oh :stuck_out_tongue:

er… could have something to do with the rear break dragging

its still turning internal parts in the engine which cause friction increased with the drag of the oil also even in neutral a bicycle only has the wheel to turn as it has a one way hub ( why you can backpedal ) and less friction

so the spin it system does not indicate anything and as above brakes also drag

things you can do …

basically look at each link/section of chain for broken /damaged rollers /sideplates

check tension

clean it ( tape two toothbrushes with bristles facing each other are a good tool to keep arounf for this job )

check sprockets teeth to see if they are curled over as this is generally a good indication that things need replacing

keep it lubed

Thanks for the response,

The chain doesnt seem to have any tight spots and the sprokets seem fine so ill hae a butchers at the brakes

Not that it helps much but my chain was checked about 100 miles before it let go…It had no tight spots and no visible signs of wear or damage.

What a nice healthy does of paranoia i now have, thanks Whistler :stuck_out_tongue:
