Policing thrown into chaos by court judgment

Anyone read this story this morning? Quite an incredible judgment by the courts. It means if you are arrested and the police get their full extensions to hold you, they cannot bail you, as they do currently, for longer than the time they can hold you.

In essence they can hold you for 96 hours and then charge you or release you. Currently the police have been working on the basis that this clock only ticks when you are in police custody and stops while you are on police bail, but this morning the courts have ruled that the clock does not stop ticking when you are not in police custody and continues to run while you are on police bail.

This is terrible news as obviously some cases are so complex that 96 hours is not enough time to investigate and gather evidence to charge.

Will be interesting to see what they do over the next week.
